Have you heard all of the other demo versions of that same group? There's like a whole "album" out there that is all of the pre-production demos of almost all of the BOATS songs + "Classic Jazz" and "The Rain Cloud and I"
I think there was another demo floating around for awhile before BOATS was released with the lyrics in this video.
I really respect Kenny for writing from such a mature perspective at a time when he was so young and so many of his contemporaries were writing vindictive, misogynistic songs. Decisions, Decisions, Cheek to Cheek and Surprise, Surprise all deal with the sort of emotions that might make someone lash out but he does it in an incredibly healthy way, I think. And the foresight on Hello, Houston still amazes me. I love this band you guys
That's their one album I haven't really checked out at all (besides Island). I'll get on that soon Goldenslot
this song should have been on an album. i think its my favorite song of theirs. the chorus is hypnotizing.
also just heard the chorus for bedroom talk for the first time in like a decade and reallllly fucking regret it
Kenny’s writing about long distance relationships has always been so endearing to me (Hello, Houston, Playing Favorites, Left Coast Envy) and this song seems to me to talk about a long distance relationship that’s no longer just strained because of the distance thing, but just because the love isn’t quite there anymore, long distance or not. It’s a really heartbreaking song. One of my favourites too
Looks like I can no longer go to the NYC show on Sunday. If anyone wants to buy my ticket hit me up! I got a pdf ticket and I think it was about $40 after fees.
I’m like becoming obsessed with this band for the first time in YEARS... a friend of mine put on ready in the car Friday and now I can’t stop listening to them ha. All 3 albums are great but BOATS is the best
Last summer I introduced my nephew to SILYMI and now that he’s 9 we’ve been spinning BOATS on car rides and yeah it’s so good. Kenny’s voice is especially strong on it
BOATS is too damn good. I remember buying it the day it came out and loving that initial listen. My only gripe is “Bedroom Talk”. I’ve never been a fan of that song at all. “Surprise, Surprise” is my favorite song on the record, it gives me so much nostalgia any time I listen to it.
I know SILYMI gets written off because they were young/sound wasn’t ‘developed’ yet, but man that record means so much to me. Super nostalgic, and for that reason my favorite TSL album. “Direction” is a very close second though. BOATS has some classics but never hit me from front to back. I’ll have to revisit and give it a proper chance. SILYMI is probably my favorite “pop-punk” record ever.
