The Dangerous Summer made a career doing it … there’s so many bands that have kept the genre alive and thriving?
It's just wild how there was almost a hard halt when all the best bands kinda slowed down and the next wave of watered down versions popped up. So many of the most popular bands in the pop punk realm these days are just so straightforward and frankly boring, low hanging fruit. I feel like I have to search so hard to find those few gems that are around
This is literally what everyone that loved Lifetime and the Descendents and NOFX said about the bands you love. Copy paste what you just said was said about The Starting Line. You grew up!
honestly, after THAT era, that genre died for me. it doesn't make sense to listen to a handguns record when we have the starting line. why eat out of the dumpster when you have a fridge full of food?
It’s just generational. Somewhere there’s a band putting out an album right now that is some kids BOATS (or insert fav album here). Once I hit my mid 20s new music stopped hitting the way it used to. Even from bands I loved. There’s a reason the cliche of parents hating their kids music exists. Don’t get me wrong though, TSL is probably a top 5 band for me and I’d sell both my kidneys if they’d tour anywhere near me.
I'm very happy for you if this is the first time you are listening to that arms length record. and the fact that you can roll right into their new record this coming week!
It’s just nice to see BOATS get its flowers now. That album was hated when it came out, and it’s nice to see it have the legs it has.
I adored BOATS right away. I saw the band 4 times within a year, from weeks before the album into the Screaming Is For Babies tour in early 2006. Hearing Inspired By The $, Ready, Photography, Surprise Surprise, and Bedroom Talk live before the album came out was so cool. Peak time as a TSL fan for me.
I kinda liked the debut at the time but BOATS blew me away, as the kids say, they were cooking on that album
I remember being floored when I heard “Photography” for the first time. The growth from their debut (that I only could listen to in small doses) to BOATS was truly insane and the fact that it was done on a major? Even more so. While I wish Nights and Weekends and the full band version of Lasting Impressions made the record - I still love this record front to back. This record came out as I was graduating High School and certain songs instantly take me back to where I was mentally at the time. Love when music does that. (Direction is still their best record though)
The Starting Line line is one of those bands that I actually like each album more than than the last. I hardly ever revisit SILYMI, but adore Direction. Definitely in the minority on this one.
Aside from a few tracks like Decisions, Given The Chance, and Leaving? I straight up don’t like SILYMI that much and never revisit it lol
Also love all 3 albums equally. Do agree that each one got better but damn do they all mean something to me.
