Up there as one of my favorites. Some amazing instrumentation that I truly believe bands are still inspired by.
Ending on a slower song would feel weird. I also put on the Anyways EP after listening to Direction. "Luck" is such a good song.
No way, Cut Print It is the perfect resolution for BOATS -- from the lyrics about closure and moving on, to that awesome drum outro. Just a perfect ending note for that album
Ready shouldn't have been on the back half of the album. Could see it working better swapping places with Photography.
I think they nailed the sequencing on all of their records. If I were to change anything at all it'd be cutting a couple of tracks from BOATS entirely, namely Autobiography and The World
I love everything this band has done, but man, something about BOATS hits me so hard every time. I was maybe 16 when that album came out and I remember grabbing it on release day with a few of my friends. It pretty much took over my whole summer - the perfect album to encompass that time in my life where I was experiencing, I dunno...teenage things? Staying out late, playing music in my friend's garage, trying my hand at "dating" (if one can call it that) for the first time in life (and subsequently getting dumped and analyzing those feelings). This entire album was basically the soundtrack to one of my biggest "coming-of-age" periods in life and it just makes me really nostalgic for being young and stupid again.
I mean yeah if it had been released a single my opinion might be different, cause at least it would've fulfilled its sole purpose on the album. Instead it just remains a really annoying song that has nothing to do with the album thematically and explores nothing different sonically, which is what I'd consider textbook filler
I remember when those people sang "The World" on American Idol one time. Super weird and random....and awful.
I'll never understand how The World made the cut but not Nights & Weekends. Or Lasting Impression. Or Classic Jazz. Damn that album had great b-sides.
Seriously. And it was well after BOATS came out (actually after Direction, too I believe). I remember seeing it live. It was the very beginning of the episode where the remaining contestants film a ridiculously cheesy music video. I remember it being the most low-budget, green screen music video where not a single person was pumped to sing the song. Sounded like shit lol On a much cooler note, I went on a cruise to the Bahamas a couple of weeks ago. Literally, the first song playing when I got on the boat was "Shining" by Vacationer. It was even that much cooler considering all I heard was the same top 40 stuff the whole rest of the week.
