Recently I was able to catch up with New Jersey-based indie rock band, The Spins, to discuss everything that went into their latest single and music video for “One More.” In this interview, I asked the band about their style of music, their upcoming touring plans and more. If you’re enjoying the interview and music video, you can pre-save their forthcoming album, Left Behind, that releases on July 25th, here.

Thanks for your time today! The Spins recently released a great new single called “One More.” What do you remember most about the writing process for this key track on your new LP?

This song came to life in a very natural and unique way. We actually began the song one day dealing with a little bit of a slump in inspiration. Our drummer, Freddy, came up with the drum beat you hear on the song first before anything. He actually recorded an entire structured song of just the drums (structured exactly how the song is now) with very minimal changes from the original to the studio version, and then we added the instruments on top of it. Phil put down that groovy bass-line you hear, Nick quickly felt that syncopated chorus-y guitar you hear in the instrumentals, and the rest all came together quickly after. This was actually the first song we wrote on this new project!

How would you describe your live performances/concerts?

Our live performances are like a big party. We bring the energy and try to make our shows really fun for the crowd. We actually got our start by throwing very DIY house shows up where we’re from in North Jersey, where’s there are no real venues or very much of an actual music scene. So from the start, our shows have always had a very organic, interactive, fun party feel to them. We like to come out swinging and get the crowd pumped up to let out and release all the emotions they’ve been feeling in every day life.

What inspired each of you to make music? Was each of your music upbringings different?

Although all of our musical upbringings were very different, we all have always connected and bonded over a common and very intense passion and obsession with music. We’ve all basically known since we were little kids that music was our true love and passion, and grew up with the same experiences of day dreaming about the “rock star life”, playing music on stage, and being able to do this for a living. We can’t even really point to anything specific that inspired us to start — it’s just been a thing we’ve loved and felt a true draw to since we were children. It truly found and called us to it.

Where do you find inspiration for creating your music in The Spins?

We find our inspiration from a lot of different places — that’s actually what we feel is one of our most unique characteristics. We have such a wide variety of influences and genres that we’re into. Since we were kids, we’ve all listened to everything from classic rock, to modern pop, to rock, to indie bands, to country, to jazz. We find our inspiration in whatever may be the current coolest music we’re listening to, and finding a way to tie that into our own unique styles and sound.

What do you hope fans will most feel or connect with when they listen to The Spins’ music?

We really hope fans can just find that genuinely relatable feeling of emotional connection to the music we make. We make music to express and connect with all the different emotional experiences of life that can hopefully act as a release in a way. A lot of things in life can be hard — loneliness, heartbreak, hopelessness, anxiety. Those are all real experiences that everyone faces at some point or another, and we hope that our music can in someway be an outlet for those emotions and help at least one person feel better or brighten their day in some way, the same way music has always done for each of us. It’s always been an escape for us from the every day struggles of life, something that takes the pain away and makes things feel a little better. We hope that our music can give that same experience to people.
