New Hum album came out yesterday. Let's talk about one of the best/most underated genres of the 80s and 90s (despite roots in the 60s).
excuse me for being ignorant but what is space rock, and is it different from a variation of prog, alt, and post rock?
i would say it is closest in “sound” to shoegaze (spacemen 3/spiritualized) with some bands getting more alt-rock in their sound (failure/hum). basically it is partially a lyrical thing and partially the guitar tone being atmospheric and distorted with a lot of reverb. that being said the genre also was pioneered in the 60s/70s with Hawkwind and was basically just psychedelic rock with space-based themes
i can’t provide links rn but my favorites are: spiritualized - ladies and gentleman we are floating in space spacemen 3 (singer/guitarist of spiritualized’s first band) - playing with fire hum - you’d prefer an astronaut failure - fantastic planet pink floyd - dark side of the moon (pretty obvious) hawkwind - space ritual flying saucer attack - further shiner - starless cave in - jupiter
Scientists have been asking this question for years: Would The Galilean Satellites by Rosetta be considered space rock today? In this essay, I will
Throwing a couple new bands in here that aren’t terribly original but I like what they’re doing anyways: Sound like Failure: Sound like Hum:
If the new Cloakroom record - produced by Matt Talbot - sounds anywhere near as good as new Hum, I’m going to weep
