Doing a rewatch. I will say while Many Saints sucks, I think it is a necessary watch for lore purposes and understanding Junior. Cory Stoll as younger Junior was one of the few things decent about that movie.
That dynamic is always funny. They did a retrospective for Starship Troopers years ago and while Verhoeven was talking in depth about the themes and allusions, Casper Van Dien looked like he had no idea what anyone was talking about.
I disagree. They give Junior these weird motives in the movie that don't align with the plot of the show
We completely understood Junior by the end of the first season. The film doesn't really color in his character. We knew how insecure he was.
I think it colors his relationship with Christopher, especially in the first season for sure. Revealing that Junior was the one behind Christopher's dad's death all along is a pretty big deal I think.
But none of that was there when they wrote the first season. No one had thought of that dynamic at all. They weren't saying do this or do that because Uncle Junior killed Chris' father. This is the big problem with serialized storytelling; you retcon ideas that were not really there in the first place. It is the same problem as when Tony Blundetto is introduced and is apparently a huge part of Tony's development even though we never saw him or heard of him for most of the show. It also ruins one of the great moments of the show, which is Tony telling Chris that the retired cop killed Dickie. We don't know if Tony is telling the truth or not, but we do know it is part of Tony's way to tie Chris' loyalty to him.
I don't think it ruins that moment because in the movie we just see Junior make the call, we don't really see who pulls the trigger. It still could been the cop.
I literally pretend the movie never happened. I like to think most of us do. It’s triggering me that you’re even talking about it let alone defending its narrative decisions lol
I haven’t seen the movie and probably won’t BUT I will say that the name of the movie is pretty great
I have (somehow) gone my entire life up to this point, at 34, where I've never seen The Sopranos despite loving prestige television. I watched season one five or six years ago and enjoyed it, but got distracted by other things and just never picked it back up. I've been in a mobster mood lately and figured now was as good a time as any to give it another go and I'm already fully sucked in. Can't wait for the ride. Unfortunately, I've seen the final shot of the show many times (because it was ubiquitous when it happened), but I don't suspect it will alter my enjoyment.
I’ve treated this show the way normies treat The Office. Just always rewatching random episodes when I don’t know what else to watch . I think in total I’ve seen the show beginning to end, 5 times?
Watching for the first time and the soccer episode in season 1 felt so weird. Didn't recall Meadow ever playing soccer and then suddenly her coach leaving the team was a huge deal and then there was this big dramatic deal around him and meadow's friend and then the next episode had absolutely no mention of anything from it.
