I knew from the start that Chase has used Goodfellas as a blueprint for the series but its funny re-watching the movie and spotting a Sopranos actor (aside from the obvious Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli).
Yup, and Tony Sirico plays a mobster in the beginning during Henry's childhood and he's only seen getting out of a car.
HBO shows share a lot of actors. A lot of boardwalk and sopranos people are also in The Night Of. Even in Entourage Vinnys financial advisor is Beansy in the sopranos. I also couldn't do Boardwalk after Jimmy is killed I just felt like that was such a weird/bad choice. I skimmed through the rest of the series and read synopsis and then watched the last episode and was satisfied with the final scene and how that played out.
Yea the scene serves no purpose. Should have just done the Phil Hartman on Newsradio and acknowledge upfront his character passed away between seasons.
Given how strong the show is, the decision to make a CGI character for such a minor scene is baffling. It also does not make sense within the context of the show; Tony was distant from his mother and would not openly walk in talking about a criminal investigation like that.
I’m re watching this right now, and I totally forgot about the cursed position on the one crew. I remembered pretty much everyone who gets made captain on it dies somehow. GG’s death I knew was coming, but I forgot how realistic it was versus a lot of other deaths on the show.
I have two more episodes to go, haven't been spoiled. So glad I decided to throw this on one snowy Sunday this winter.
The episode where Chris works with the rapper trying to extort Hesh is really bad, as is the storyline of Tony's father's mistress. A lot of people hate the Columbus Day episode, but it is better than it is given credit.
Definitely some clunkier episodes but its a very long show that succeeds most of the time. Even the messier episodes contain scattered moments of brilliance imo.
I think season 6 prt 1 is my least favorite in terms of amount of episodes/storylines I really don't care for, but the episode with Ben Kingsley is hilarious every time. I really like the chatacter pieces in the episode where Carm and Rosalie go to Paris.
No. She sings “happy birthday mr.president” to him in a creepy ass way. Imo that episode illustrates for Tony how his skewed perception of his father/family’s legacy is actually disturbed and traumatized. You can see how uncomfortable Tony is in his father’s shoes. The mysticism he projects onto the past is swapped for something deeply unsettling.
I'm nearly through S4 of my first full rewatch so I just recently watched the Columbus Day episode. I was surprised to find out some people consider it to be the worst of the series. Karen Baccalieri dying is a pretty heartbreaking/well done set of moments in the episode.
iirc Christopher was a little out of place cause of the main plot's relative insulation from the rest of the series, but it wasn't as intolerable to me as some folks find it. but, i'm coming up to it on a rewatch now, so we'll see. cgi livia was always one of the most baffling and obvious missteps for an incredibly consistent show. chase says it was to keep new viewers up to speed, but who's first sitting down to only watch this one episode of the sopranos? it was out of character of the show's willingness to abruptly kill its characters and force living characters to cope with that, and while it was helpful for the airline ticket subplot, can't help but feel it wasn't 250k well spent, heh.
this is pretty much how I feel. there are no episodes that I think I would ever skip over, just because even in the "worst" episodes, there are great character/story moments.
