Is The Smiths releasing 4 albums in sequential years more a sign of the times or is it something remarkable for the 80s as well?
I think it's the times. Budgets were bigger, music culture (esp underground) was different than what we have now.
Musically that song rules, lyrically it's super goofy but I still like it enough. Supposedly Johnny Marr was unhappy with that. He said something to the effect of "I crafted such a beautiful piece of music, and he decides to go on about how big girls and their mothers are"
Almost no way I could do a top 10 with this band. What I can offer is a playlist of their final concert, if anyone is interested. There is a video on Youtube, as well.
Yeah. Lyrically it's basically an extended "built this pool" (not an insult) but christ, that guitar lick just keeps on delivering every time I listen. Have you heard the (only?) live version?
My list This Charming Man Panic Bigmouth Strikes Again How Soon Is Now There Is A Light Girlfriend in a Coma Ask The Boy With The Thorn In His Side Please Please Please Stop Me
I think it's a little of both. It's remarkable that all 4 records were excellent, but it's a sign of the times as to how they were constructed. They don't feel cohesive or like albums, just collections of 9-11 excellent songs
I actually disagree, I think all four feel like cohesive albums to me with slight expansions to their sound happening on each one. I agree that it's remarkable to put out four incredible albums in four years though at any time.
Eh, some songs feel tacked on I'm certain places (despite being great songs) and they just feel like a platform to sell singles. I do love how they expanded their sound on every album. The self titled feels the most cohesive

1. This Night Has Opened My Eyes 2. Girl Afraid 3. This Charming Man 4. There Is a Light That Never Goes Out 5. Half a Person 6. Bigmouth Strikes Again 7. I Know It's Over 8. You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby 9. Still Ill 10. Shoplifters of the World Unite
Yeah, I'm a vegetarian and even I think Meat Is Murder is a bit too preachy and pretentious of a song. But then again, this is the same guy that cancelled an entire show because someone in the crowd was selling meat. MIM gave us Headmasters Ritual and Barbarism Begins At Home though so it's still an excellent record, just the least excellent of the bunch.
1. Ask 2. Bigmouth Strikes Again 3. Miserable Lie 4. Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others 5. The Boy With The Thorn In His Side 6. Shoplifters Of The World Unite 7. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out 8. Is It Really So Strange? 9. Cemetary Gates 10. This Night Has Opened My Eyes 11. Still Ill 12. Panic 13. The Queen Is Dead 14. William, It Was Really Nothing
Yeah. The whole thing is. There have been good songs written about vegetarianism and the criticisms of eating meat, but MIM is not one of them. I also don't care for it musically either. It's a fine enough Smiths song but it's definitely my least favorite.
