What is your favorite Smiths opener? It's hard for me to pick, but I have to go with The Headmaster Ritual. Such an amazing track.
Honestly, I love almost everything these guys have done, however Meat Is Murder is epitome of a sophomore slump for me. That album just bores me. Also, happy 13th birthday to The Queen Is Dead.
Motion City Soundtrack will always have my heart, but there are days (like today) where The Smiths could very well be my favorite band of all time.
It still absolutely blows me away how much material these guys put out in a span of 5 years. 4 records, a slew of b-sides and singles, and several alternate takes. I think I have like 70 unique Smiths songs in my library. And the really mind blowing thing? They're. All. Gold.
yeah, it's insane. I'm surprised these days to get two albums in two years ever. Let alone four years in a row. I can't imagine being a fan of this band back then, it would have been insane. They look like they were so much fun live as well.
As much as I'm not a fan of them, The Beatles were even more prolific. And yet it takes Brand New 8 years to write one record
It's amazing to think that their career was so short yet they released a string of seminal records. That's almost unheard of in this day and age, where three years between albums has become almost the norm. If you were to put a gun to my head and ask me what my favourite Smiths record is the answer would be Louder Than Bombs.
yeah they released 4 lean, short records back to back and they all have the potential to be my favorite at any given time. Not to mention the fucking slew of b-sides and singles. Theyre all so good too. Morrissey and Marr were unmatched when it comes to songwriting. Andy and Mike dont get enough love imo, theyre a fantastic rhythm section. The Smiths always had some super creative basslines and some powerful drumming.
yeah, every section of the band were perfect and they made perfect music together. It's so sad that they pretty much broke up for no reason.
Imagine if Brand New released all four of their albums in back to back years. Unrelated, but does anyone have recommendations on where to start with Johnny Marr's catalog?
It's funny to me that The Smiths-Complete actually isn't complete. It's missing I believe 3 or 4 b-sides? Does anyone know how many actual, unique, individual Smiths songs there are? I read 71 somewhere but I have 76.
