Just got home from the cinema after seeing The Smashing Machine, it's really good, DJ by far puts on the best performance of his career to date and I think it will be in the awards conversation.. will he get nominated for a few acting awards.. who knows but it's definitely in the conversation, he really did the work big time. Emily Blunt worked her ass off for what she was given and the suprise for me was Ryan Bader as Mark Coleman.. he was great for a guy that is currently an MMA fighter had no acting experience prior and was cast 2 weeks before filming began did a great job and I think he does have a future in acting once he retires from fighting.
Bader was my favorite part. The Safdies are undefeated when it comes to finding people from different walks of life who turn out to be decent actors. That said, I don’t think Dwayne is gonna be in the conversation for many awards. I think this is gonna be forgotten come awards time.
I can’t imagine A24 had grand illusions that this was gonna be a big hit. Like WB with PTA, I think it’s to give them a project so that can keep the relationship going, as well as establish one with Dwayne and Emily Blunt.
One thing is this.. Dwayne is gonna campaign his fucking ass off during awards season so be prepared for him to play the game to levels that haven't been seen since Eddie Redmayne when he was campaigning for his performance in The Theory of Everything... That guy was fucking everywhere during awards season and this was before he was oscar nominated then he took the campaigning even further when he was nominated!
Yeah true, I mean Dwayne is going to do another movie for A24 called Breakthrough with Darren Aronovsky directing..so DJ does have a relationship with A24
This works better if you view it as a parody because my god the scenes of blunt and the rock fighting are so bad. what a weird movie to make. my buddy said it would have been better to focus on that final tournament and all of the fighters and I agree with that.
I love that they never say what drugs is he's on and just keep showing us Chekov's vial, and then afterwards he talks about it like TIm Meadows in Dewey Cox If Emily Blunt wants to eat funnel cake on the graviton you do it, it was nice seeing her let loose and yeah it was interesting that Coleman just lit up the screen every time he was on it and was happy with kids and they were no let's focus on the weirdo
I watched the documentary of the same name a few months ago and Mark Coleman was exactly what u mentioned and seen in the film.. just a normal family man when he's not fighting! But if DJ doesn't get any nominations in the upcoming awards season.. at least for me it's a step in the right direction career wise.
So I guess this was basically a shot for shot remake of the documentary of the same name. Weird choice.
really dug this, can easily see how people don't like it though. i applaud benny for writing this on his own without bronstein but i think marty supreme will be much better than this movie, probably not fair to compare tbh other than its the two brothers solo efforts whatever they do next together will be awesome that's my gut feeling
Read the summary of the documentary the smashing machine. He basically just rewrote what happens in that. I want to watch the documentary but apparently they had it scrubbed from the internet.
