Been 20 years since Phil Hartman's passing Losing his voice was probably the end of golden years simpsons for me.
I still have a vivid memory as a kid being home and seeing that news come up on TV. I actually called my mom and work to tell her. I guess I figured it was important she knew immediately.
I wasn't aware of either at the time, wasn't allowed to watch Simpsons or SNL so I didn't know of them
Thought this was confirmed long ago. Only found out maybe 10 years ago that was Dustin Hoffman as Mr. Bergstrum but credited under an alias because movie stars appearing in tv cameos was still taboo back then.
I think the most interesting part is that he wasn't allowed to record Lisa's birthday song. I remember they showed this episode the day MJ passed away, they played the full "do the bartman" song at the start.
my favorite conspiracy theory that came out of this is that these anomalies occur because the simpsons home exists in another dimension which we got a glimpse of in Treehouse of Horror VI in Homer^3
Xfinity has nicely put all of the Treehouses in one folder for easy browsing. Man, 2-9 are some of the best episodes of the series
I'm not sure this really reckons with the issue, but I also don't know how they could do it gracefully after they completely fucked it up and had woke bb Lisa of all the characters be the one to justify their actions
The Simpsons handled this so poorly. First they half ass address it, then double down with an out of character PC rant from Lisa, and now are just running from the criticism entirely. Just cancel the damn show already.
Yeah, I can't believe it's apparently this hard for them to address/own up to it. It's completely embarrassing and disappointing
Imo would've been great if they'd just recast him and release a statement apologizing for their errors
Exactly, I didn't much mind the character as much as I did a white man voicing the character. I do find it funny that their solution to this is exactly how petty Homer would respond to a similar situation.
It's silly, but i've learned a lot about other cultures because of characters like him. I would've liked to see them double down on all of the positives that Apu brings to the show. And maybe get an Indian guy to do his voice, like someone who's good at voices so he can even bring in some fun new characters.
