Mendonca has been putting out really good work for a while but everyone should try and watch Bacurau. It sort of got forgotten because it was released in 2020 but it is a biting critique of class.
The first scene was intense but the next hour+ was a really slow drag (besides the shark scene of course) until they got to the interview/flashback part. Whole movie could have been about 30+ minutes shorter.
the interview scene and then the final 15 minutes are two of the best stretches of film last year. didn't love the full thing but still pretty good. moura should win the award someone who gave a performance much worse than him will win sunday.
I am usually one to check out early if I have been drinking/on a weeknight, but I am 45 mins in and engaged and only stopping because I have to give some dumb teacher presentation in the morning.
the only part i didn't really love was the stuff with the leg. i get what it's representing and why it's there but every time it took me away from moura i just got mildly frustrated.
The production design for this is really something special. They truly recreated a time and place that’s so vibrantly lived-in and specific that it makes you feel nostalgic even without having the personal connection to it
That’s fair- it’s intentionally distracting. But I found it pretty amusing. Apparently it’s a reference to a real urban legend at the time.
It is something he has been working on for a while. His previous film was a documentary about the same era.
I spent a month in Saul Palo with many late night convos. Every topic/night would have its own the stupid leg story myth. It start out as a normal rational convo and then when the leg comes out you have to pretend it’s not insane, listen and then say what you think it means to you.
Yeah this was the best overall aspect of the movie. Whenever it cut to the present-day it felt so stale in comparison lol
Thought this was fantastic and now I must work my way backwards as I’ve seen nothing else from this director.
