I was meh on him in 5 but I kind of hesitated on calling Barrera a solid #4 in the above post because he’s honestly right behind her lol
I like Mason Gooding and was excited when he was announced for 5, but remember being disappointed with his character/how he was used
I think they just try to make Chad more masculine than the actor playing him really is. The macho tough talk does not come across natural, yet they made him start fights in both movies. Also him and Melissa have no buyable chemistry on screen.
absolutely loved this. still catching up on the thread so I don't know if it's been discussed, but I think what's really exciting about this is how the meta angle has kinda moved away from "hyper-literate teens are hyper-aware of horror movie rules!" (except for the 'friend group discussion' scene which felt a little clunky this time around tbh) to "teens are hyper-aware of the franchise they're in and have to embrace or reject it". really fun to see them build almost exclusively on the characters and imagery of past movies, and find organic reasons for them to connect with the new cast, which I do think 5 was missing. especially liked Kirby/Mindy and Gale/Sam bonding over what they had in common opening scene was especially brutal for this franchise, and the double killer reveal was a very cool way to turn our expectations on their head within the beginning few minutes. Gale/Ghostface scene was also an absolute all-timer, maybe one of the best scenes ever in the franchise. laughed out loud at "can I put you on hold?" "what-" also the last line from Gale in that scene was an absolute heartbreaker. train scene was also phenomenally unsettling, I hope they keep ratcheting up the tension like that if they keep making Radio Silence sequels a lot of really good stuff outside those thee parts, but yeah, that last act was something. didn't like that angle when they used it in Scream 2 and I liked it even less this time around, although the 3 killers twist was genuinely pretty good. also thought Dermot's performance was kinda outright bad at the end there, and calling his son "virile" gotta be top 5 weirdest lines in this franchise lmao. as much as the reason for Neve being absent sucks, I don't think the film really needed Sid and it might have even felt too crowded with her around. my suspicion is they pretty much subbed Kirby in when they realised Neve wasn't coming back, if that's true it was a really good decision and worked seamlessly
This is the best Scream since the first one. Some of yall's complaints are wild. This was fun, brutal, and balls to the wall from the very beginning. Melissa ruled. Jenna Ruled.
Think all of the acting of the Core Four are pretty good, but Melissa carries this movie. The bodega scene is excellent, and this movie goes toe to toe for memorable sequences with 5 imo, but 5 is just stronger and and well-rounded imo. The ending is just so, so silly lol. Which, for Scream, is a feature, not a bug, but like...it feels so weird to kinda love something you know is bad as you're watching it unravel. Would have preferred a reverse reveal where Kirby was the killer and the commentary was about the connection between horror films and trauma and seeing your own trauma play out on screen or something. And the reveal isn't even the weirdest part for me; I'm aware of the logic, but Sam dressing as Ghostface and taking the time to call the detective and use the voice modulator just seems so dumb for movies of these caliber lol. Ethan popping back up is the same thing, like, I get that this happens in every movie at this point, but it was so much less surprising/effective than it was in 5. And weirdly, as much as the Skeet Ulrich stuff didn't bug me in the last movie (I was able to kind of able to roll with it as a one-time thing), it felt more egregious to me here. Idk. I had a blast so I really don't mean to complain, but cartoony is definitely the word for some of it.
I think Ritchie makes Scream 5 so good. The humor to the menace. Wasnt expecting him at all during the reveal. Been a big fan of Jack Quaid since he was on HBO's show Vinyl." And obviously The Boys 1>5>4>6>2>3
as written Richie is not too interesting but the actor really did a great job, both as the comic relief and killer. I laugh every time I think about his interaction with Sid at the end. "what are you doing in here?" "hiding... from murderers" as much as I loved this movie it had the weakest acting from the killers unfortunately, none of them were all that great. would've hated Kirby being the killer but there had to have been a better version than what they went with lol
wait, how did I not realize that Sydney is possibly married to Detective Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey) from Scream 3? I know in both V and VI Gale mentions "Mark and the kids." Mark Kincaid?
