The Sci-Fi Thread

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by Aaron Mook, Feb 25, 2023.

  1. I figured we have one for Horror (and specifically horror films), so why not Science Fiction? I've been on a big kick with all the fake UFO news. Watched ET the other night, doing The Vast of Night and The Abyss tonight.

Currently looking for more sci-fi/adventure recs in the vein of Stargate and Avatar.

I really wanted to like the vast of night but it did nothing for me unfortunately

  3. It was good but glacially paced for me on first watch, doing a little bit more for me now. Definitely something you need to prepare for going in

I really dug The Vast of Night when I watched it a couple years ago. Would love some recs that are similar to it

some favorites that come to mind:
    The Thing
    The Fly
    Event Horizon
    Alien and Aliens

I assume you've already seen The Fifth Element Aaron?

  5. If you haven’t seen Fire in the Sky, make it happen. However, it’s Science Fact-ish because it’s based on a true story.

  6. some obvious favorites (and some obvious blind spots)

Alex Garland: Annihilation, Ex Machina (I haven't seen 28 Days Later)
Denis Villeneuve: Arrival, Dune (I haven't seen Blade Runner 2049)
Christopher Nolan: Inception, Interstellar (I haven't seen Tenet)
Alfonso Cuaron: Gravity (I haven't seen Children of Men)
Wachowskis: Matrix 1-4, Cloud Atlas (I haven't seen Jupiter Ascending)

Been meaning to re-watch this as an adult, it scared the shit out of me as a kid.

Also, excited to re-watch Sunshine once Blank Check gets to it in their Boyle series.

  12. Some favorite shows: Fringe, Orphan Black, Sense8, Westworld, Doctor Who, Stranger Things
These fall more under the superhero umbrella but they have very fun sci-fi elements to them: Legends of Tomorrow, Agents of Shield, Loki, WandaVision
Now that I think of it, aside from maybe Legends and Who I haven't seen anything that takes place mostly in a space ship. Nothing like Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica

  13. I haven't! This, Fire in the Sky, and Sunshine have been on my list for a long time.

  14. Great list! I've seen Wrath of zkhan, Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Men in Black, Akita Battle Angel... all great. Men in Black is a five-star film for me. Pacific Rim, The Iron Giant, and Titan AE are all on my list to revisit - I loved Titan AE as a kid.

    Thanks for the recs!

  15. Sunshine is a classic. Need to revisit that one soon.

Also, can't start a sci-fi thread and not mention 2001: A Space Odyssey!

    Some smaller/indie sci-fi recs:
    Moon
    Coherence
    Timecrimes
    Europa Report
    Predestination
    Attack the Block
    Oxygen
    The Discovery
    The One I Love

Ah yes, Moon and 2001 are another couple blind spots of minel. Also need to get around to Pacific Rim, have both on DVD

I really like Cloverfield and Chronicle. I feel like found footage is more of a horror thing than a sci-fi thing

How is Communion? I've always been interested but haven't gotten around to it. Is it more horror?

2001 is cool from a technical stand point but unfortunately it doesn’t do much for me.

  23. I loved Moon in high school, haven't seen it in years though.

I fell asleep when I saw 2001 for the first time in theaters lmao. I think I was still working on accepting and "understanding" surrealism and unanswered questions in film. I liked it much, much more on second run. Gorgeous film.

  24. (can we change the name of the thread to "sci-fi thread," I keep getting an unfortunate mental association with band-who-must-not-be-named)

i tore a hole in the fabric of time Moderator

Arrival gets better with every viewing for me.

District 9 is another I need to revisit soon. Remember loving it immensely.
