the prog pop side of this reminds me of mew at times especially parts with bells like the dialogues bridge
The reason I ask about the mix is that there is something about the cymbals that is bothering me. Like the drum mix is so crisp and clean except for the cymbals, which are coming across as harsh and "sizzle-y" to me, almost like they're gated. The choruses of Colored Out, Dialogues, and even Bask are the worst offenders, whereas on tracks like Northern Orthodox the crashes and cymbals sound great to me. I can't tell if it's clipping or if I just don't like the compression on the drums for those songs. The crashes just don't cut through the mix yet sound like they're peaking or something. Anyone else noticing this or are my ears failing me?
listening now with this in mind, I think its just a rawer cymbal sound they were going for on those songs. There's also a shaker on bask not sure if you are picking that up as well.
The shaker on Bask is great, definitely noticed that! However you may be on to something here. I had been listening on a (reasonably old, yet decent) car system when I noticed all this, but now that I'm home and been listening through a pair of nicer headphones I'm not hearing it the same, everything sounds great. Colored Out in particular is spared of all the harshness I was hearing in the car. The crashes definitely seem mixed super raw with tons of attack and much less decay than I'm used to but I think my car system was just bringing that out to a fault. Alright enough nerding out for the moment, gonna go listen to this album 9 more times
I haven't played this album today and that makes me sad. Probably not a bad idea to take a break tho.
True but i have a v bad connection where i am and i made the rookie mistake of not downloading it on my phone
I tried man, but my weekend shifts start this weekend. 4 hour drive couldn't work with me making it there and coming back.
