I got into the band because I read Trouble Boys on a whim and I think they're awesome. I've been loving the Don't Tell a Soul alternate mix and the Pleased to Meet Me box set
Been working on a favourite songs of the 80s playlist and so far allowing 5tracks per artist. Think a lot of this band's most popular songs are also their best (although could make a case for many deeper cuts). So far I have 1. Unsatisfied 2. Swinging Party 3. Here Comes a Regular 4. Bastards of Young 5. Can't Hardly Wait Outside looking in are Alex Chilton (never been the biggest fan but it's catchy), Left of the Dial (Tim's terrible production ruins this one for me a bit), Skyway (sits behind the other ballads in the top 5 for now), I Will Dare (just not Replacements-y with its REM guitars), Answering Machine (passionate but very dated). Which others should be strongly considered in your opinion?
That top 5 is pretty phenomenal. I'd make an argument for Androgynous, Sixteen Blue and I really do love I'll Be You.
nah it's great five other songs: 1. Can't Hardly Wait (Tim Version) 2. Favorite Thing 3. Color Me Impressed 4. Kiss Me On the Bus 5. Little Mascara
A top 5 is difficult, but I'll give it a shot after going through a heavy Replacements listening period. 1. Bastards of Young 2. Left of The Dial 3. Never Mind 4. I.O.U. 5. Color Me Impressed I would add "Seen Your Video" on there, but it's more of an interlude even though I ALWAYS listen to it when I put on The Replacements. I just love it.
Tim is actually my favourite of the Mats' albums, but my CD copy sounds really flat. It's okay for several of the songs but has always bugged me on Left of the Dial in particular. I think because it's a great song but through my car speakers it can't seem to compete with the road noise. Has made it difficult for me to connect with that track in particular. There's a reissue with different mixing??
Honestly? I think the production on Tim, and their entire discography for that matter, is part of their charm. The production on this band’s discography only makes sense given their legacy. Crash and burn, baby. Rock’n’Roll. Red Red Wine on a Sunday. At the end of the day it just shows how great the songwriting actually is. A bonus is how well this band translated live. Fucking-a, just one more album PLEASE!
Yeah I feel bad that I've never gotten into Westerberg's solo stuff. I actually quite like the first Chris Mars solo album though!
I thought I posted my top 5: Bastards of Young My Little Problem (with Johnette Napolitino) Alex Chilton Dyslexic Heart (1991-1992 was just a pivotal year for me) Achin' to Be (and if solo stuff not allowed, I choose I'll be You)
Agreed, when my fav songs of the 80s list is finalised it will be very high up. Presently number 14 between The Message and Downtown Train.
I dont think I knew of Bash and Pop. Had to google it. Wasnt there another offshoot from them as well?
A fine choice, I presently am tossing up between a few. Current top 4: Just Like Heaven I Know It's Over (not one of The Smiths' most popular but their crowning achievement for mine) Atlantic City Total Eclipse of the Heart
