It's kind of funny that Mi Fa Mi is now regarded as their best album. I remember a lot of people being disappointed with it when it came out since it was a lot more restrained than their first album. Mi Fa Mi has held up better in the long run, though.
Every time I get notifications for this thread it makes me so happy people still think of this band. While I'm here, I want to plug Narco Debut's first record Strange & Ever Changing Depths which has some of TREOS' unique vibe and is a really great debut.
It's held up better in the sense that it sounds less distinctly like the mid-2000s scene, but I don't think it's as good an album. Casey's departure is really noticeable because he had such a distinct vocal tone/style. The transitions aren't as interesting and feel a little more tacked on and less like natural extensions of the songs (the outro of "Oubliette" vs. the transition from "Evidence" to "War") and the instrumental interludes don't really go anywhere. BTHATS is a little more same-y but it's doesn't slip up once across 70 minutes of music, while Mi Fa Mi has a few songs that are just kind of ok. That said, they're both amazing albums and no band's breakup has ever made me wonder what might've been more than theirs.
BTHATS is one of my favourite albums ever, it's such a well constructed album. Mi Fa Mi falls pretty far short for me, I've only revisited it a handful of times in the last 10 years.
I'd argue they are both top 20 for me, tho The Earth Sings probably makes it into top 10. This band just means so much to me and the time of my life I was in discovering them.
I saw that band Bent Shapes years ago and had absolutely no clue that the vocalist was the original TREOS vocalist Also had no clue he was from Christians & Lions, that first record was great
Just searched TREOS on twitter and someone is saying Chicago is a date... Edit: She deleted the tweet.
Found this in like 5 seconds googling Chicago Envy on the coast may 2020 so they're playing at the bottom lounge...
