I have the alternate cover version of the vinyl and it isn't on there but it did come with a download card for the track. Apparently they also released a 7" lathe cut but only made 12 copies.
I can’t tell whether Weightless Underwater would have fit better on BTHATS or Mi Fa Mi, it’s like a perfect bridge between the two
Fucking hell, how have I never heard this song before? At least I don't think I have! Either way, it goes off the chain hard.
They made an album without him, I think they were doing okay. Doesn't change the fact that TDH and TREOS aren't that similar and doesn't answer wanting to know what they'd sound like now. They could make an album without Casey again and I'd still wanna hear it.
oh man, i did not know casey was absent for mi fa mi. that’s my bad. i’ll have to give this album a listen.
i wonder if it would continue the whole “keyboard core” sound that was all the rage in new england 15 years ago
Seeing this thread get bumped inspired me to go back and listen to both albums for the first time in years. These guys were really something special weren’t they?
Casey was gone before mi fa mi. Then Brandon left after mi fa mi because he was having a kid and wanted to be to committed to that, that was the nail in the coffin. Then Casey has been difficult to get involved in reunion efforts… it would be ideal to have him involved (especially at first) but I would take the mi fa mi lineup if it meant being back long term
i'm 100% not trying to start shit in the TREOS thread. here's my opinion as someone who liked/likes the band and likes the dear hunter. it'd be cool to see them make new music as a coherent whole. the synths have a place and i think new music would need them to define the sound. listening to mi fa last night, and having listened to heart and synapse, my biggest criticism now (that probably was maybe seen as a value-add back then) is the song length. some of the songs just seem like they go on and on forever and sorta meander with no direction. if i was their manager or producing their record or whatever, i'd be telling them to keep the songs all between 2-4 minutes tops. i don't think it matters so much if casey is in the band or not, but i'd tell them to listen to a lot of the newer hardcore music that's out and try to pull from that a bit. my two cents. would be awesome to see what their experiences over the last 15 years would do to the sound.
I understand what you are saying, I hated mi fa mi when it came out and did find it meandering - I’ve come around on it recently. But length isn’t the issue, if a new album is a bunch of 3 minute songs then it’s not treos and what made them special. The band said before they broke up their next album stylistically would’ve been more of bridge between their first two albums which is what I’d love to see come to fruition
idk... i like how twiabp and (don't cancel me) saves the day have a mix of really long and really short songs in their later outputs. i feel like a balance could be struck. i really like short songs but maybe that's just what i write. everything on mi fi feels muddy, but i get what you're saying. even much of the dear hunter stuff is on the "verbose" side to put it lightly. it would be a departure, definitely. which reminds me, i know a lot of bands (ceremony for one) do the whole, we're a heavy band but then transition into a softer band. i'm waiting to send a band go in the other direction.
I must be in the minority thinking Mi Fa Mi is so much better than the debut which I've always found to be very one note, almost sounding like one long song... even though that song is good. They really expanded their palette on the second album. On the downside, the vocals got more homogenous as it was missing Casey's tone, which made him stand out back then. Considering how young they all were, I'd be so interested in hearing them cook up something again, all with their more matured songwriting and performing skills etc.
I'll stand with you in the minority then. I love both albums but Mi Fa Mi is on another level for me.
