We called the vet this morning and they said to be safe, bring him in, so I'll be bringing him in later this afternoon. Again, still seems to be doing OK. I think I may be able to go through my home insurance to cover any associated costs and my insurance may deal with her insurance and I think they may be able to force her to at least get a fence.

My wife was telling a neighbor this morning about what happened, and that neighbor said she heard that the bull mastiff is very protective of their home (we were on the sidewalk) and that the woman's kids' friends have to sneak in the house slowly or they get attacked. WTF?

My poor guy has had a very rough 24 hours. Yesterday morning he was throwing up and we found blood in his stool (he had some stomach issues early in the week, but they really escalated quickly). The vet put him on anti-biotics, anti-nausea, and dewormer. Then this morning, I woke up at 4:00am because he was pacing around the house. I figured he needed to go outside and relieve himself, but then I saw his face was completely swollen. It appears to be completely unrelated to the medication for the stomach issues. Probably a bug bite. He's doing better now and we've got him on Benadryl for the swelling. I feel so bad for him, but he's going to be okay.

@ncarrab Damn that's awful. I hope your Pug is okay. There's one dog like that in my neighborhood. Friendly enough once you get to know it, but very territorial and jittery. Thankfully, the owners only ever keep it in the backyard because of that.

Pretty sure if you asked him, he has no regrets. Whatever he ate to cause the stomach issues, or whatever bug he probably tried to eat, he'd do it all again.

Damn, not a good two days in The Pet Thread. Hope all is well, @aoftbsten. How old is your dog? My dog used to have blood in his stool a lot when he was a puppy. We had to take him to the vet constantly for it. He also used to (and still does on occasion) vomit out of nowhere (vet thinks the vomiting has to do with grain).

He's almost two. He had a lot of stomach issues prior to turning one, but he's been in the clear for almost a year (usually because he'd try to learn about the world by eating it). This was probably the worst episode he's had though. Did you always take him in when you found blood? The vet told us yesterday that it's usually just colon inflammation and typically not something urgent unless it lasts a couple of days. Which, I mean I trust the vet, but I'm not sure if I'll ever be willing to just wait and see on that.

The first four to five months of his life, we lived in an apartment complex where he'd always get into other dog's and geese' shit, and literally the entire time we lived in the complex, he would have blood in his stool. I took him to the vet constantly because they wanted a sample every time and then I had to give him medicine. Once we moved into a house/neighborhood, it didn't happen much more, if any (I can't really recall when it stopped seeing as we moved 7+ years ago).

Yep, often when he would get sick as a puppy it would be because of another dog's shit or geese shit. When we moved it essentially stopped happening because people are better about picking up after their dogs here and we're further away from the geese.

He's stopped darting after other dogs poop in general, but I'm thinking he might have gotten into the neighbor's dog's poop (we share a fenced-in lawn) and that's what caused it. The neighbor is typically pretty good at picking up after their dog, but it's inevitable that we both miss it occasionally when the dogs poop.

  12. I had to put my 12-year-old dog to sleep a few months ago and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I’m 31 so she was with me for some of the most important years of my life. My parents decided they didn’t want to get another dog right away, however my mom continues to battle cancer and the whole family is on edge, which makes the empty house sometimes just feel even even worse. My parents decided to get a dog this week since my younger sisters have been missing having one and already on the first day of having her in the house, you can just feel everyone’s anxiety melt away. It’s absolutely incredible how we take pets for granted and how unbelievably important they are to keeping us whole.

This is our new girl, Olive.

Have any of you dog lovers ever dealt with a dog that had geriatric/late-onset separation anxiety?

Our dog has always been attached to me the most and has almost exclusively slept in his crate since we got him 9 years ago. Recently, he's started whining and howling after we put him in his crate at night at bedtime and did it again early this morning (it was shortly before I usually wake up, so I think he may have been anticipating that). It seems to be worse if we have his crate in our room, I think he can sense we're nearby and wants to be closer to us.

He already has arthritis, high blood pressure, and one eye, and his sight seems to be deteriorating in his remaining eye, so I think it's all related, but I don't necessarily want to give him even more drugs.

We had a strong hail storm today for the first time in over a decade and it has my pup freaked out bad :tear:

he’s always been shy but noises and storms have never been an issue before but seemingly since he turned 6 a few months ago storms and noises bug him more than ever. I hope it’s not always this way for him. I’ve had him wrapped in a blanket on my lap (he weighs 50 pounds lmao) for 3 hours now and he’s finally sleeping so that’s a good sign!
