Out of nowhere at lunch today, from my 8-year old son - Him: "Why do so many Christian songs use the h-word?" Me: "Do they? I don't listen to Christian music, but where are you hearing these songs?" Him: "I think they do. That's what my friends say." Me: "Well, hell is a Christian concept, so it makes sense that those songs might mention it." Him: "Hmmm . . . I believe in hell so I must be a Christian." Me: "You haven't developed full analytical reasoning capabilities so you don't get to pick a religion." Him: "Can we play Mario Kart after lunch?"
My wife took my son to his friend’s birthday party today so it was just my daughter and I. She wanted to go outside and build a snowman because we haven’t gotten to do that yet. She’s currently very into Hello Kitty because that whole brand is having another cultural moment (though I guess Hello Kitty’s sort of always having a cultural moment), so I told her we could make a special snowman together. We had a blast. I love her so much.
Buncha cuties in here! Kid is back at school, I’m back at work, which means I will be procrastinating and browsing here. Side note - After the election I deleted all my social media and reddit because it was just a real bummer. Happy to have some sort of social internet refuge here :)
baby had her first fever last night (nine months in). it was like the newborn phase but there was no consoling her. v tired.
got through elliott’s 2 month visit with flying colors! he is 14 pounds!! it sucked seeing him cry after getting his first vaccines but he honestly took it like a champ
Today when I was picking my offspring up from school, my sweet innocent summer child asked me, “mom what does dildo mean?” I told him it was an adult thing and to not say that. That one caught me off guard
my 2.5 year old's teacher told us yesterday that he said "fuck" in the morning, which made me laugh internally, but also I don't quite believe it.... he's been talking in "his silly language" sometimes, which is just funny babble, and I think he was doing that. He's never said fuck around us, doesn't really hear it anywhere, and when we asked him about it he was kinda confused what we were referring to..... who knows
This is hilarious haha. Who knows, maybe he’s been secretly watch Samuel L Jackson videos after you go to sleep.
probably!! Like, I've probably said it casually in front of him, but he's never reacted or said it back, so it would be really weird to hold that in his head for a few days then randomly say at school with no context.... just feels... fishy hah
One of my daughters called the other one a “hole ass” the other day and tattled to us and we started laughing. my oldest would mutter “God dammit” under his breath when something wouldn’t work when he was around 2
Speaking of which, what are you all doing regarding music and explicit language? Are you not caring, are you listening to Clean versions only, what's the vibe?? I always figured I'd let the standard versions be what my kids hear and not make a big deal, but now that his school already is on his case.... maybe that's not my best bet haha
our oldest was similar at that age; she would say “fuckin man” when she got frustrated (I think from hearing me say “fuck me, man” in frustration, or something like that). first time we heard her say it was at a pastor’s house. whoopsie.
I’ve never been super strict. He’s starting to get to that age where he’s discovering more and more music which is awesome, but I’ve just emphasized that he’ll hear some lyrics that aren’t appropriate to repeat. It’s not so much the cursing I’m worried about as I am with like misogynistic or dehumanizing lyrics which we’ve had some good talks on. I’ve said it’s just like how if you watch a movie with violence, you don’t repeat the violence. The content lives within the song / movie / whatever. I’ve also had to tell him not to make musicians or celebrities his personal role models.
My wife and I both openly swear in front of our kids and don't really care if they swear either. Our oldest is 5 and we've just taught him that he can swear at home but if he does it in other places, he might get in trouble. That's mostly just led to him not swearing cause he doesn't want to upset people. We will see how well this works with my daughter when she gets older. She's a bit of a wildcard.
