After seeing this twice I think it's safe to say that this is up there with one of my favourites of the year. Rona's journey is terrifying intimate. She continually mistakes heavy episodic drinking with a sense of autonomy and lashes out at anyone who tries to help her. Most of the binge drinking is confined to flashbacks, while the film primarily focuses on her struggles with sobriety. Saoirse navigates both of these with remarkably; managing to be both enormous and microscopic when needed. The same curiosity that drives Rona to dance on tabletops in London at 3 AM also compels her to return home in search of a better life. Although her perspective has been distorted by alcohol, it is not wholly defined by it. Recovery is exhausting, but there is a better life at the end of it. While it may never get easy, it does gets less hard. Incredible sound design too.
