anyone else feel kinda underwhelmed with the new drive by truckers album? i mean, it's not BAD at all, and on the whole i think it's got some great tracks...but only 9 songs, and only 2 cooley tracks?? it's a far cry from sprawling masterpieces like the dirty south or decoration day.
"Supergroup" (using the term loosely) of younger Texas guys. Josh Abbot, William Clark Green, Cleto Cordero (Flatland Cavalry), and John Baumann. This album is a love letter to flat, barren, windmill and farm filled west Texas. Solid album.
Oh look, a new album that I actually listened to! I only went through it once, but enjoyed most of it.
Oh is that what that is? I saw that in my Apple Music in the americana new releases but didn't listen. I'll give that a shot.
Been listening to the first Brandy Clark record a lot in preparation for the new one, and I feel like this song in particular may just be one of the most overlooked songs in recent memory. So good.
The new Caitlyn Smith album is pretty great, as expected. "I Don't Want to Love You Anymore" was a standout on first listen.
Anybody create a playlist of their favorite country songs? I've slowly started getting back into the genre the last few years (after drifting away from it around middle/high school), and I want to in the near future go down a deeper rabbit hole of the good stuff, to see what I've been missing.
I've heard very little chatter about Moreland's new one. I think Katie Pruitt kinda overshadowed it and deservedly so, it's fantastic, but I think LP5 is a solid effort. I could do without the two instrumentals and I'm still only meh on "A Thought Is Just A Passing Train" but overall I enjoy it.
Not necessarily my favorite but this is basically the playlist of songs that I share with my friends when they say they don't like country, but what they mean is they don't like bro/pop-country. Country Music, a playlist by Matt Conte on Spotify
I have a similar playlist to what was posted above. I convinced a co-worker to go to a Jason Isbell show with me when he was playing in town on a work trip a while back. He enjoyed the show so much he wanted me to rec more artists/bands similar to Isbell. Here’s what I put together for him. country tunes, a playlist by jdr2187 on Spotify
Alright I'll throw my hat in the ring. I've got a Playlist I made for a buddy who has since converted into an Americana fan. Hopefully these links work. Americana/Country, a playlist by davediddy3 on Spotify
the end where he plays the melody from "the bonnie banks o' loch lomond" gives me goosebumps every. single. time.
Okay, here's a playlist of 200 different artists. Some are dyed-in-the-wool country artists; some are non-country artists that have written songs that (to me at least) clearly cross into the genre. Some are super beloved, others are kind of maligned but have (in my opinion) had moments of greatness. I tried to really run the gamut of what I featured, from pop-country to Americana to classic-leaning stuff. With a few exceptions, it's all from the past 10-ish years. Hope you (and anyone else in this thread looking for some new artists) enjoy it! What IS Country Music?, a playlist by Craig Manning on Spotify
I wasn't the user who asked for this playlist, but as someone who has come to adore this genre in the last few years almost exclusively because of your writing and posts on here, thank you.
Glad to hear that! It occurred to me as I was putting this together how many of these artists/songs I've never really talked about on here, so I hope there's still stuff to be discovered.
This is fantastic man, thank you; quarantined at home for three weeks (company told employees to work from home), I got a ton of time now to listen to music, so this will be a great list to dive into and explore. I tip my hat to you good sir
