I'm With Her being a band name is kinda lame af l but the music's good so w/e I guess. Oh man this is good as hell, thanks for posting!
Also, Steve Moakler has a new song out and a new album coming later this year. This guy does the Springsteen-influenced/heartland country thing really well. Big fan.
I really like this guy, and I dig this track a lot but I can't help but wince at some of the lyrics. Mostly just the "red white and blue" part, I feel like I just can't help but cringe any time that phrase get used in a country song ha. Maybe I just get Toby Keith flashbacks. Really like what I've heard of that Wade Bowen record too.
Yeahhhh, I don't love that about it. I'd be okay with a moratorium on that phrase. I kind of wish nobody wrote patriotic songs. (Hell, I kind of just wish no one was patriotic.) That Christian Wyatt album is really solid. Made my EOTY list last year. He made his debut with Dave Cobb a few years back, which I can't believe I missed. This one was with Marshall Altman, who is Will Hoge's go-to guy. I forgot about that Vandoliers LP. That was a good record too. I feel like you'll dig this Paul Luc album that came out yesterday: https://open.spotify.com/album/43I6b4pqaoJKBVU1eVYlNA This does help.
Ha, yeah at this point for sure, especially. Though I feel like there's always a lot of caveats with patriotic-sounding lyrics like that. There's obviously a world of difference between that Moakler song and the Toby Keith one I mentioned, but it still kinda irks me. Moakler's invoking of that kind of imagery seems to be more of a "humanistic" brand of patriotism than the kind of jingoism that "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" encourages. So there's something to be said for that, I guess. I still gotta check out his debut, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. So far I've yet to listen to a Dave Cobb-produced record I haven't enjoyed, and Marshall Altman has a good track record too. He did a good job with that Frankie Ballard album from 2016, even if he still let shit like "Little Bit of Both" slip past haha. Nice, thanks for the rec! Listening to it now and so far I'm definitely feeling it. That particular song was my introduction to him and it sounded (to me anyway) like if The War on Drugs went full-on folk/country. The record as a whole has a pretty good variety of americana flavors, I think. Really looking forward to what he does next.
Yeah, Moakler definitely isn't going jingoistic, but he's done that kind of song before (shining a light on the underappreciated or overlooked) without needing to evoke something along those lines. Definitely a far cry from Toby Keith though. I still dig that Frankie Ballard album. Especially the Stapleton co-writes.
At any rate, I guess we should all be glad it's not that fucking Take a Knee My Ass Won't Take a Knee song lol. Jesus. That's something I'd like to forget exists. I enjoyed that album for the most part and some songs show promise, I just hope he'll be able to break away from his country radio-courting tendencies in the future because if he just went full heartland rock like Kip Moore has, he could really be on to something.
also, it sucks how much Granger Smith lost the plot once he attained some mainstream success because his old stuff isn't bad at all. I think he could EASILY make a really good Texas country record again if he wanted to, but unfortunately the dumbass Earl Dibbles schtick probably pays the bills way better than that would.
So did I just miss people talking about the latest Lydia Loveless cd last October? This thing is good.
Been in a big southern rock mood lately. Been delving into the Allman Brothers Band and rediscovering Lynyrd Skynyrd outside of the two songs I can't stand haha. Gov't Mule has some quality stuff too, and I love that Warren Haynes solo album that came out a couple years ago. Really like that final Gregg Allman solo album before his passing. It's a heavy listening experience knowing that he didn't live to see it's release.
