I liked Tattooed Heart. A little overly scrubbed and tuned, but mostly just a really solid record from a pro with an exceptional voice.
Yep, it streamed on NPR last week. It's pretty solid. Definitely mainstream-leaning, but he's a strong songwriter.
hard pass on luke combs. new albums by jade jackson, justin townes earle, and pokey lafarge are all great tho.
Complicated Game was my AOTY a couple years ago and I still listen to it regularly. After you finish that one I highly suggest Childish Things, but all his albums are solid, can't go wrong.
I love James McMurtry. His dad wrote the book Lonesome Dove (among others) for those who didn't know. Also if you like James McMurtry give Bob Woodruff a listen.
Here's Isbell doing Rachel's Song by Mcmurtry. This video is actually how I found out about James McMurtry so I figured it was relevant here.
McMurtry is great. Still need to read one of his dad's novels haha. and here's the (in my book) even more awesome Ray Wylie Hubbard covering one of his best songs
New Secret Sisters album is streaming on Rolling Stone Country. Stream Secret Sisters' Defiant New Album 'You Don't Own Me Anymore' Pleasant stuff. Really nice harmonies. They did a bunch of backing vocals on last year's solo LPs from John Paul White and Dan Layus. Album is produced by Brandi Carlile.
Two new Deer Tick albums on September 15th!! Finally some new tunes from these guys. They disappeared for a while. https://americansongwriter.com/2017...5523860&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook
At this point McMurtry is flat-out one of my favorite songwriters. Discovered him in '09 and he's grown on me every year since.
I didn't ever get around to picking up the EP, but I love "Illinois Sky." Any band that namedrops Two Hearted Ale in one of their songs is fine by me.
I listened on Spotify when it came out, but sort of forgot about it. Need to download it so it's in my iTunes.
