also marcus king blew the roof off the place last night, cool little festival we've got going in suburban stl
Dunno if it's just the venue but tickets were going well below face the week before the show here. Couple buddies have seen like 6 shows this tour so far, always different. It really is full blown jamgrass, not just bluegrass with extra long solos. Really fun stuff
That’s awesome, his shows seem to sale out pretty quick here. Edit: I recently went to a show where Daniel Donato was sitting in on guitar and he absolutely killed it, which repeaked my interest in his solo stuff. It occupies kind of a similar space to Billy Strings stuff, very jam band influenced, but more cosmic country than bluegrass. Thought you might enjoy it, but I’ll be honest his voice can take some getting used to.
And it’s shit, especially compared to their previous albums; it’s all slow ballads, with no upbeat jams they always had before
Obviously Sturgill is the big one today, but I’m equally excited for the new James McMurtry. I also highly recommend this new Sierra Ferrell album.
Also, Sam Williams (Hank Williams' grandson) released his debut today. Features a spot from Dolly on this song.
imagine having a dad like James does and deciding you're gonna be a writer too. and then being a fucking incredible one.
Pretty cool to see Pitchfork recognize McMurtry for the first time. James McMurtry: The Horses and the Hounds Was just thinking while listening to this album, there are a lot of great songwriters that deserve more recognition, but I think JM may top that list for me. I think his very best songs could stand up against just about anybody else’s. Always shocked he isn’t more well known or more popular.
i feel like he’s actually pretty popular? maybe it’s goosed from choctaw bingo but his streaming numbers are actually pretty decent but yeah, super glad to see the press.
I guess I’m basing it on seeing him live here in Nashville. Most guys that are as great as him and been around as long as him are selling out the Ryman. He comes to town and plays fairly small venues every time and doesn’t even sell them out.
right. he definitely seems more removed from the industry aspect of it than most of the similar sized names.
