I don’t think he was meant to look like a badass leader at any point, he was meant to look like a cursed harbinger of doom, obviously from the Trojan’s perspective but more importantly from Odysseus’s. Acquiescing to him and doing such a depraved act to win a war for him is what led to all of Odyssesus’s bad karma in the first place

Very funny that all the right wing culture war nonsense leading up to this was about how "disrespectful" it is to the source material to have a trans man and a black women in the story, and then when the movie comes out the actual message is that the Trojan Horse is a crime against humanity and nature and Nolan portrays it / the sacking of Troy as the ancient equivalent of the nuke, and Odysseus is clearly Oppenehimer repenting for his sins. That is a far more explicit indictment of the source material (and obviously anyone who glorifies it) than a few minor casting choices lol

Accidentally posted this in the “Obsession” thread, but I couldn’t just leave it there.

So I didn’t like how there was no depth to the characters. I get the argument that that’s in line with Homer’s poem, but as an almost 3-hour movie I’d expected more than just a series of events

Everything looked phenomenal though, action was great, Robert Pattinson. Plus when Penelope challenged the suitors to string the bow, I almost said, “Oh shit!” out loud

Also I genuinely enjoy that irrespective of time period, Jon Bernthal plays all of his characters with the same mannerisms

I thought this was brilliant, might be my new favourite Nolan film. I think it did a wonderful job at bringing to life the best parts of the book and the horror of those situations and weaving in the morality of regret for the wrong you've done to others. The inclusion of the sacking of Troy at the end was incredibly effective. The moment with the dog had me almost tearing up.

The scene with the witch molding the men's heads into pigs was also a big highlight for me, Samantha Morton was fantastic and the practical effects were very cool.

I also thought it was interesting how similar to Oppenheimer it was in terms of them both being about a guy who used his intelligence in a way that got a whole bunch of people killed and then had to learn to live with the guilt of what he'd done.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I have an IMAX 70MM in my city and waited too long to get tickets. Just bought mine today for August 6th. It's crazy how sold out every showing is, even the 10AM. This was like struggling to get a concert ticket. I had to look desperately for a good seat.

4DX is mostly fun when there’s a movie with some scenes of action and some downtime. I saw Mortal Kombat II in it and it jostled me around so much, I thought it might mess up my back.

Backrooms in 4DX was really not worth it.

Totally agree on movies that have some kind of transportation element in it like F1, Top Gun and even Gran Turismo, work best for the format.

I fear the Poseidon’s revenge scene in this movie would kill me.

The god damn flash bulb lights in that scene were blinding as hell. Can’t also imagine being thrown around in 4DX.
