Excited for my 11:40am showing on Friday, haha. Got an interview the day before, so will be a great way to chill the day after.
I will say.. it is a little perplexing that this was filmed in a format that only like 40 theaters in the entire world will get to actually show in it's intended format. yeah, it's mostly peripheral parts of shots that'll be missing in other aspect ratios, it's just not a trend that I think the world is ready for yet considering the cost to run these types of screens and the scarcity of them.
I was reading something that it hasn't been more of camera choice for full films due to the noise they make and it being difficult to film dialog scenes with them, but apparently Nolan built some sound proof enclosure that weighs like 400 pounds lmao
anyways, I realize it's not really that big of a deal, I just hope directors that start adopting this more regularly aren't putting things in those parts of the scene that would suck to leave out for us normies that don't have those screens available to us.
they also rigged up a mirror apparatus so the actors could still see each other / the sightlines could still line up because the whole thing was so big
few things didn't quite work, but i found this one of the better flims all summer. was surprised that it felt at times more like a standard issue nolan movie (not a complaint) than a more loyal adaptation of the source material, as there weren't THAT many instances of witchcraft, the cyclops, etc. given that it's pushing three hours. there's very little of what you might be expecting/hoping that this doesn't deliver on: setpieces, filmmaking, performances (other than holland who's pretty much a blank slate, though matt damon was better than i figured). one or two scenes where nolan gets kinda weird with it, at least for him. other stuff i've seen people refer to as genuine horror ultimately a step down from how outstanding oppenheimer is, but i knew he wasn't gonna top that. it's one of those great films everyone says we never get anymore. hope it's a massive hit
Where does he go from here probably useless to discuss bc I wouldn’t have guessed the odyssey after Oppenheimer but it doesn’t feel like you can go bigger than this
Do an original sci fi thingy again. He’s one of the only directors that can consistently get giant budgets.
I believe he said the success of oppenheimer meant that he had a chance to take the biggest swing he could think of, hence this
Hard to do bigger sci-fi than "travel to another galaxy, somehow survive going through a black hole", haha. I think Bond after Denis would be sick. Amazon would give him unlimited monies to do whatever he wanted
