Every single thread and video relating to the Odyssey seems to be flooded with bots (or just idiots) complaining about the movie saying it looks bad/thinking it’s going to bomb. I think I’m out of the loop here - has this broken containment? Does any real life human being care or is this just one of the most insane, deeply online cases of astroturfing possible for a movie that is likely to make buckets and buckets of money

Nearly finished with the book and I'm reminded of this song by Josh Garrels, which I can now more fully appreciate:

I will say the trailer makes the setting look nothing like the Aegean (even though parts of it were filmed in Greece?) and to me that does look "bad" given the source material

Agreed, and the fact the story is fiction does little to justify anachronisms, at least when Chris has such a penchant for authenticity. But as with most things, storytelling will trump aesthetics (or it won't, and quality aesthetics will hardly matter).

Finished the book and really enjoyed the conclusion. Hopefully Chris can stick the landing and the chatter will fall by the wayside.

I also think there’s a huge difference between watching a trailer on your phone and seeing the 6 minute Trojan horse sequence in IMAX. That blew me away.

But maybe I need to get me eyes checked or I’m an idiot because I think things like the armor looks cool and I’ve heard normal people say it looks bad?

This reminds me of the Zach Cregger Resident Evil complaints but on a much larger scale. I am interested in what this artist does with this material rather than give a perfect 1:1 adaptation

There is a degree to which, if a talented filmmaker with a strong voice and style is making a film based on a classic. I’m more interested in what choices the filmmaker makes and how those choices work for their film, than how “faithful” per se those choices are. Especially when it’s starting with an epic poem with various fantasy elements.

Though also. I’m not sure how “wrong” it really looks, within the range of what good movies regularly do to create their settings?

I truly, truly hope that this is a case of a loud minority.

    3 main complaints:

    1) The incels have been told to be angry, because the source material it's based on is a translation that supposedly puts a feminist spin on the original story.
    2) Black cast
    3) trans cast

    A bonus 4th reason.
    4) to appear non-bigoted, everything from the accents to the cinematography is being dragged so there is a 'hey man, I'm just judging it as a MOVIE' to fall back on.

I've encountered people in reading centric discords who get really mad when you say stuff like the Odyssey is fantasy and some people are incredibly mad that they aren't wearing the gold/red looking garments they supposedly wore in this time period. You can't please everyone and there are people who think that adaptations should be 1:1 faithful and I'm sorry, that's just boring. I want the director to put their own voice into it and make it an interesting/fresh take on the source. We've all read the fucking story, let's see a good/new/different interpretation that still respects the source.

But like others have said, it's definitely a loud minority and bots really pushing discourse. This movie is going to do NUMBERS just like every other Nolan flick and I personally will be sat (I'm watching it twice that first weekend)

Their whole thing is to be aggrieved at the wider culture. They need to keep fueling it by adding more things to rally around. When New York tried to regulate large sodas the far-right went on stage with the biggest soda cups and pretended they were revolutionaries fighting oppression. They went apoplectic over more energy-efficient light bulbs. They act like the world is going to end when a rap song is raunchy. They want college-educated coastal people to mock them so they can say it is proof that they are right.

speaking on the rap comment, my township has a really nice outdoor pavilion that gets a pretty good mix of artists and in the last couple of weeks some MAGA chuds have been going to town hall meetings to request that the pavilion not allow artists to play there with what they deemed "inappropriate" lyrics and subject matter because they can hear the music in their house across the lake and surround areas. keep in mind, the pavilion was there first, they willingly moved into those houses knowing that was going to be the case. thankfully the pavilion told them to kick rocks but the township is requesting they "be heard" and "be included in conversations" about scheduled concerts. also, the guy who raised the initial complaint apparently doesn't even live here lmao.
