maybe I just wasn't exposed to many negative Nolan takes for a long time but it felt like people at least generally liked his stuff, or else he wouldn't be where he is. definitely have seen a higher uptick in people who dog on him and if you press them on it, you get called a glazer. regardless, I will be sat
agree that this take is pretty tired. no one needs to relitigate whether nolan is great or not in the big 26. only losers are acting like thinking any of his films (or nolan himself) are bad/overrated is some badge of honor. it’s also weird that some mfs think oppenheimer is the moment he “beat the fraud allegations”
that said, this is still a better conversation than what some doofuses are having about nolan “going woke” with casting decisions or whatever people from the bowels of twitter are going on about
lots of complaints about his color palette but he's basically had that color palette his entire career due to his color blindness. expecting him to change that this far into his career just because he's adapted something like the Odyssey is super strange to me. I'm not saying people can't have a negative opinion of him, to be clear, it's just a lot of nerds now turning on him because he isn't being "historically accurate" for The Odyssey is dumb, to me.
Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and African people couldn't have possibly existed back when this story was being originally told around campfires.
A co-worker who I liked and never posts anything decided to post complaining about the casting. Crazy to see Nolan on the other side of the culture wars with the way so many Bush Republicans embraced The Dark Knight.
The funniest complaint for this I’ve seen so far is that the wardrobe isn’t good because it isn’t dirty enough.
The debates about historical accuracy always makes me think of Ralph Cifaretto yelling at his television while watching Spartacus because the haircuts were not accurate. Hollywood perfect teeth always give it away too. I also think a certain number of people don't realize that The Odyssey was fictional. It is not a biopic. Homer would have given them all Meta Glasses and had them go to Raising Cane's if he wrote it today.
He was not. He was obsessed with Gladiator but watched Spartacus because Chris told him to and he was mad that it was less historically accurate.
The Oscars new eligibility rules are a joke, but for the opposite reason they think. They are absurdly easy to meet because they include stuff like the makeup and wardrobe departments. How many straight men do you really find in makeup and wardrobe?
I gotta say the trailers haven’t done much for me but the IMAX exclusive scene they played before Avatar was awesome.
The eligibility rules were made to create the illusion that the Oscars were more inclusive but the requirements are so low pretty much any film clears the bar.
