I’m sold on just about anything Eggers wants to put out already, but that trailer amped my anticipation levels up to 11
[see a character in peril while watching the movie] [remember a different scene from the trailer that hasn't happened yet where they're alive] etc, etc. I just don't see how a trailer is helpful if you're 100% going to see the movie. Blind is best. To each their own but I effectively never watch trailers and it works great.
I mean I'm just curious what watching the trailer does if you're already hyped on the movie....gets you more hyped? The inherent risk of having a large swath of the movie spoiled or revealed to you doesn't really seem like a very good tradeoff. This is also my pea-brained weirdo Cinema Studies graduate take.
I generally do not remember specific scenes from trailers if I only watch them a few times, I more use them to get the general vibe of the film. I do agree that the best trailers are the ones that are able to provide that feeling without giving away a ton of plot (the recent Batman trailer does a great job of this) but in the case of something like The Northman, which is an ancient story, knowing general plot details doesn't bother me at all.
I get what @Drewski is saying, I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I usually watch trailers, but there have been times I've regretted it, usually because I felt they gave away too much.
I forget everything that's in the trailer until I see the movie then my brain is like but to answer trailers convey mood and vibe which you can't tell from a plot description
I'm somewhat with @Drewski, there are a lot of movies I don't watch trailers for. It's less a specific fear of that kind of spoiler (ie knowing scenes are to come without the person dead), but there are definitely trailers that give a lot away and even if not it can sometimes be nice to go in fully blind. Similarly, I often won't listen to pre release singles for an album I know I'm going to day 1, though admittedly for slightly different reasons. I did watch this trailer though because I've been hyped as hell to see any glimpse of this movie for however long it's been since we heard about it and I don't regret it at all, looks awesome.
I think there have been some examples of trailers in the last few years that actually provide interesting misdirects or really undersell a critical scene, which makes the trailers definitely worth watching. But I also totally get wanting to go in with the least impression possible edit: for example the Hereditary trailer added an entire twist to the movie that would not have worked as well otherwise
Yeah, I guess I should have clarified: I will occasionally watch trailers for movies that I'm on the fence with. The trailer can be helpful in pushing toward a yay or nay on watching. But when it comes to movies I'm definitely seeing, like this one, I'll try and avoid.
I do think Drewski’s point applies to franchise films for me though. Normally I don’t remember anything from trailers, but if I’m already familiar with characters/backstory/general atmosphere, then watching a trailer has the potential to do more harm than good imo. That said, I pretty much always watch anyway
love trailers x2 often, even with movies i’m planning on seeing, they only make me more excited to see it. i think it’s directly correlated to how much you care about spoilers
