Felt it could've been better and used a little more fine tuning, but still really enjoyed it.

 

Agreed. Can't really put my finger on it but I felt I should've like this more than I did. Still highly enjoyable.

 

Like I said a few days back, it was really fun but the story was just lacking something that could elevate the film.

The story just wasn't all that interesting to me. The two leads were great, but the whole automobile/porn industry storyline was kind of meh.

 

The story definitely took a back seat to the 2 leads. A fun but forgetable film.

 

It definitely was missing the wholeness of something like "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

 

I also felt that it wasn't as intriguing a mystery as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but in this film I don't think it was as important. It took a backseat to the character work, and serviced the thematics of the character arcs in Healy, March, and Holly, which was why it worked. It was more thematically interesting and challenging than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, even if not as well balanced.

 

This was fun.

 

So the house explosion killed Ryan Gosling's character's wife, right?

 

I absolutely loved it. So much fun. Reminded me of Inherent Vice

Saw a suggestion that she could've divorced him too. I go with the original because I thought his character's infatuation with the secretary was a result of seeing her comfort his daughter in a mother like way.

 

Wasn't his necklace her wedding ring? They never address it, but he wears it the entire film. I took that as a notice that she'd passed.

 

Their house burned down. Holly told Healy about the furnace leak and March blamed himself for her death.

 

Yeah, the whole thing is pretty obvious.

But god damn, when Gosling lands in the pool and sees Nixon, fucking lost it....in a theater by myself.

 

Jesus I was laughing so hard

 

The Rock is starring in Shane's next movie which seems perfect

Dwayne Johnson to play Doc Savage

 

Hell yeah

 

Loved this

 

It's good that Hannibal Buress was in this.

 

$25 million at the box office has to be a big let down. It's unfortunate that movies like this can't make money.

 

Early summer was a weird time to release it I think

 

Failures, or underperformance, like this has to keep studios from making new, original movies. Instead they have to bank on superheroes, remakes and reboots.

 

I know, it sucks.

 

I liked this. It felt sort of like an update on Lethal Weapon by way of Black's more recent films. I don't know if it'll go down as one of his absolute best, but new Shane Black is new Shane Black and I got what I wanted out of it.

 

Loved it, really can't wait to see what else Shane Black has up his sleeve since he doesn't make films often enough.
