it never should have been. in utero is the much better album. i think i wrote like 2k words about this before lol. there’s more of an argument for nevermind being the “””””””worst”””””””” nirvana album than a top 10 album ever
Eh, I get it in terms of influence. It shook up popular music in a huge way and the ripples were still being felt into the early 00s. It retaining the spot in 2012 and now is weird. Still love them and definitely think it deserves a spot in the top 50, but top 10 is wild.
I was honestly pretty surprised it actually climbed the list rather than falling. I can't remember the last time I talked to someone who holds that record in super high regard, beyond its historical importance.
I'd say we could submit top 50s and still do a top 100 or 200. It kind of depends on how many people are interested in participating/what we want the final product to look like. Just a ranked list? A ranked list with blurbs? Blurbs for the top XX and then just ranked albums without write-ups? All stuff that's probably worth talking about.
right. it’s the difference between the two schools of thought though. are we voting “favorite” best or “important” best
That’s true, I meant more in regards to the “rock is in the rearview and receding...I played a part in moving this scenario forward” I love rock music, but I’d be happy to see the rock cliche of the lone man genius go away. Which would make Mellon Collie a good choice for SP, the bandiest of their albums Love SP to death either way
The old ones weren't voted. Each person selected 3-5 (changed from list to list) and wrote blurbs and key tracks. Compiling for a ranked list is a different beast. I'd say recruiting someone who voted for the album to write the blurb if it makes the list makes the most sense.
When we did whatever the "best of AbsolutePunk general forum users" list was, I think each person made a list of 20 and then whoever organized it reached out to folks to ask if they wanted to write blurbs for 1-2 albums they'd ranked high.
Yeah, I think I got Futures because it was the album that I'd ranked highest that ended up making the list. Which, knowing me, I ranked it third on my ballot.
If my Beggars Banquet is mostly bad take has not made me ineligible I'd love to contribute. Already have a top 50 all time list but this would really get me thinking about those choices
Now there's a Stones song/album I can get behind. In fact after listening through their discography it was basically unfathomable to me how Sticky Fingers was not considered the clear-cut choice for their best album. It seems like that honour usually goes to Exile, which is also great. But Sticky Fingers seems like their quintessential album to me.
I really like most of Let It Bleed but cannot consider an album with Country Honk more quintessential than Sticky Fingers which seems to be the (prime) Stonesyist Stones album
I’m actually with you on Let It Bleed. Very good record, deserved classic status, but not in their elite tier on a song-for-song basis
Let It Bleed might have the best opening/closing combo of any album ever. Arguably their two best songs. Stiff competition from a lot of other albums. Born to Run/Darkness, Highway 61 Revisited, Who's Next... Hell, I'd throw in The '59 Sound for sure -- up there with all those classics. And Reach for the Sun, and Home Like NoPlace is There if we're including more modern/scene bands.
