I like Walk it Back for the first minute or so and then yeah, it’s dull. The ‘reality-based community’ part is also very silly. Although it did lead to the National being able to tell Karl Rove to fuck off.
Sleep Well Beast is definitely my favorite from them. I agree that the closer is definitely the weakest song on there but I can’t abide with this Walk it Back slander. That’s got to be probably my favorite National song. I don’t get the Day I Die shade either. I can see the Turtleneck hate; I do like that song but think they should’ve put it somewhere else in the album
Oof. SWB is a top 10 National track for me. Never understood the lukewarm response to it. It feels like falling asleep high lol
If you post slander against SWB and IAETF, you must also disclose whether you consider “England” or “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks” to be top 5 National songs. You can’t disparage the band’s best songwriting and composition without providing context to explain where you’ve gone terribly wrong in your National fandom.
Top five National songs, maybe: 1. Bloodbuzz Ohio 2. Apartment Story 3. Start a War 4. I'll Still Destroy You 5. Mistaken for Strangers
Impossible for me to rank this songs bands besides I’ll Still Destroy You and Brainy being the top two
Not enough Cherry Tree love in here. Wasp Nest and About Today would both be inside my top ten without really thinking about it
1. Nobody Else Will Be There 2. I Am Easy to Find 3. Light Years 4. Don't Swallow the Cap 5. Mistaken for Strangers
Yeah cherry tree is amazing. But admittedly I’ve always felt about today is overrated and all dolled up in straps is the real highlight
My gut-feeling top 5 without putting too much thought into it, in no particular order: 1) pink Rabbits 2) City Middle 3) start a war 4) Lucky You 5) lemon World Honorable mention: conversation 16, about today, I’ll still destroy you
Are the SWB haters High Violet stans? That’s my wild guess/justification for why someone might hate on peak adult National.
If we’re gonna make this the official national shitpost thread I cannot stress enough how much the stretch of the last 5 songs on alligator towers above the rest of their catalog despite the rest of their catalog being mostly 9 out of 10s. It is the greatest 5 song stretch of the 21st century
