it kills me that not everyone loves this as much as i do. (y'know, i thought i'd outlive that unreasonable feeling someday, but i haven't yet.) i've loved A LOT of music in the past few years, but this is just something else for me. i'm almost grateful that i turned 30 the same year this album came out because i feel like it's going to be the "i was coming to grips with post-20s life and this comforted me" record for me
I still can’t get into not in Kansas. I don’t like most of the lyrics and the female vocals remind of music from church growing up.
This hit me like the last three national albums. First listen, I'm scared I didnt like it. Second listen blends with the 3rd through 20th listens because I love it and its perfect
I can't relate to this, but I'm glad you've come around. (Boxer, which is the first National album I listened to, is the only one that had to grow on me; every subsequent listen and opinion of a National album was immediate, and only grew stronger.)
Yeah I don't dislike it but I also don't really get all the glowing praise for Kansas. Wouldn't make my top 5 songs on the album.
Outside of #1 this changes every day. 1. Not In Kansas 2. Oblivions 3. Light Years 4. Quiet Light 5. Rylan
this won't be a popular take but - this bit reminds me SO MUCH of U2 it's insane. like, I mean good U2 back in the day, and particularly the "if you don't know who you are any more they will remind you" line. I cannot stop hearing it lol
I know what you mean and it got me to wondering if anyone else felt the same way so I just googled “The National”, “So Far So Fast” and “U2” and came across this extremely cursed review from a guy on reddit who heard one single in March and decided to write a lengthy review about how bad the album was obviously going to be and I had to read it so now all of you have to as well.
Having just started browsing that sub recently I can say that it’s pretty bad. There were some ridiculous takes about this album. r/boniver on the other hand is a great wholesome community with (almost) no ridiculous hot takes.. Not just saying that because I’m the mod.. Ok maybe I am
Oh I know. I thoroughly enjoy your posts in the Bon Iver thread here and it led me to checking out that sub...which I also thoroughly enjoy.
fuck this guy and his shitty takes lol. god I hate that site sometimes also anyone who uses "U2 Phase" as a negative has never heard The Unforgettable Fire or War or Boy smfh
I apologize if this has already been discussed and/or if this is just a dumb thing to say. But does the album art for this album kind of seem like a combination of High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me?
Three things: 1) The National's "U2 phase" dates back at least to High Violet. 2) U2 released a great album less than two years ago. A "U2 phase" is not a bad thing. 3) Fuck that guy.
which of their last two did you like? I thought both were highly mediocre with a couple really good songs, but I stan for No Line on the Horizon so I'm just a weirdo
