Sharon has an incredible voice and her new record is my favorite thing she's done...but Adrianne Lenker would like a word

    SWB
    Boxer
    HV
    Alligator
    SSFDL
    The National

No idea yet where this one ranks. After only a few spins, if I had to put it somewhere, it would be #6 after Alligator but it’s way too soon to say anything with any sort of definitive feeling behind it. We’ll see in six months or so but this hasn’t grabbed me at all like their last 5 releases have.

Album is genuinely beautiful - even more so after watching the short film (Really made Oblivions stand out for me)

Like some people have said, the interludes don't particularly add anything but they're short enough to not matter. The Pull of You falls on the wrong side of self-indulgent for me (not sure spoken word passages ever really work in songs IMO) and although it's a great song, 'Not in Kansas' would be better if Matt wasn't trying to cram too many words into some of the verses (comes across in parts like an attempt at Mark Kozelek style musings)

Like all National albums, I can imagine it taking a couple of months before it all settles into the subconscious

Would you say you're not feeling the pull...of "The Pull of You"?

    I'll see myself out.

The Pull of You is perhaps one of my top ten National songs. I can get not liking the spoken word bit, but I love it - the lyrics remind me of something from Alligator.

This album is fantastic. The National always flew under my personal radar for whatever reason but I'm here for it now. It is a little weighty for what I'm looking for now that the weather is warming up, but I can see the future moments where this album absolutely punches for me. Maybe this is just The National but it definitely has a peaceful heaviness to it.

Every break from record buying needs a transcendent release clause.

I made the stupid mistake of trying to listen to this for the first time in the dark, laying down in bed. I'm not even sure I finished the first track. This is the longest it's taken me to listen to a National record since Boxer and it's killing me.

oof 80 on metacritic - their lowest since SSFDL. This is definitely one that fans like but critics are relatively indifferent towards.

Then the critics can pound sand because their worst album is still above an 80.
