Listened to this for the first time yesterday while driving around Iceland for the first time and omg this is wonderful.
I am overwhelmed out how good "Where is Her Head." I dont know man, songs rarely make me cry and that song just did something to me. my fucking god.
I respect your take, and the review is well written and considered, but ohhh how I disagree with so much of it, haha.
disagree with you pretty comprehensively about "not in kansas." it is not nihilistic to take a kind of comfort in the inevitable end of existence
Not in Kansas is a beatiful song but goddammit I can’t not change the lyrics to “when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie” when the choral part comes in
It did to me when I first heard it a couple of months ago. I thought it was pretentious for the sake of being pretentious... then I saw an advance of the short film and things started to click. That's fair! Normally I find their existentialism comforting too, but the ending of "Not in Kansas" felt more like the scene in Toy Story 3 where the toys hold hands and face their own death. Which is not exactly comforting to me.
I won't be able to listen to this until Wednesday. I have this horrible feeling this is a disappointment.
listening to this album the way it was meant to be heard through my phones shitty earbuds during deadtime at my desk job (this is really good so far and I can't wait to dive in more)
I love the singles, but they did NOT prepare me for how good the album is - the day before it leaked, I was worried about the same thing, because even though I liked all three a lot, I was concerned that this was going to be National-by-the-numbers. Be sure to let us know what you end up thinking about the album!
I loooooove Hairpin Turns say it like your head was...on my shoul.......der (and I.... keep my eyes...... open) kills me
after thinking long and hard I have finally completed my ranking IAETF = SWB > TWFM = HV = Boxer = Alligator
IAETF > Trouble Will Find Me > High Violet > Boxer > Sleep Well Beast >= Alligator >> Sad Songs > S/T I understand how annoying it might be for others to see this new one ranked at number one literally the day of its release, but my first impressions of National albums have proven to be pretty accurate in the past and this is the strongest reaction I’ve had to a new album by my favorite band, which is CRAZY considering how long they’ve been doing it. It’s a really exciting feeling to have.
I guess we doin’ this SWB =>IAETF > TWFM > Boxer > Aligator > HV > SSFDL (I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the entirety of their debut lol)
Listening to the Q version now for the first time in a bit I think I'm already coming around on studio Rylan being the best version lol. I skimmed that fan edit and I do think the lead coming in in the second verse was better than now, but oh well. In terms of the vocals they might actually be my favorite guest vocals on the album. Boxer > Alligator > Sleep > Sad Songs > Trouble > HV > s/t Not gonna rank the new one until I've heard it a bunch
