Great piece about a great album! Though there are other The National albums that I think are better Alligator really is special and I think this piece perfectly describes how it's a document of a very specific and fleeting time in the band's history.
Last 5 songs are the peak of the band (or at the very least, the opening run of a peak that also includes Boxer). One of the clearest dividing lines for a level up you’ll ever see.
