I'm sure there is an implied comma here, but I could also see it being Matt's weird nickname. Matt Berninger, the "Man Who Cut Onions" .
I'm glad we agree that they should have put the even longer "Not In Kansas" with like 7 more verses on the album!
I’ve got weird National opinions, my top 3 are probably HV, IAETF, and Alligator haha. I like this new one though
This is probably the most wild but still believable top 3 someone can come up with. Putting self-titled in there would make it crazier but it’d also push it into a trolling opinion. This seems real and it’s unhinged and I respect it.
I like both long ones on IAETF, don't love either. The inclusion of both and especially back to back is the bigger issue. I actually like Not in Kansas now that the 'omg most elite National song' hype is gone. It's good just a bit too corny to be great.
“People always debate our records. No matter what, we have collections of ugly ducklings. We’re never going to write a perfect rock song. We’re never going to do the thing we set out to do. All we can do is this uncovering of these awkward songs. They grow on us and grow on other people. It takes a while to hear them, and that’s what makes them special. They feel sculptural eventually, but when we first do it, it’s like, Are we even a good band?” The National Want Their Taylor Swift Duet Played ‘in Context’
Literally all I’m thinking of as I read everyone’s varied opinions on this and the other albums. To me, this is what makes them such a great band. They acknowledge that they will never be the band for everyone but know that people love them for that reason.
I want the band to go in front of Congress and say, in unison, “we are not the band that recorded High Violet and you should be ashamed if you still want us to be.”
I’m not expecting it to be that long, either. I think it’ll be very similar to Folklore/Evermore. They learned something from that, wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another Taylor appearance in there, too.
