the Val Jester throwback is kinda cute but ugh yeah miss me with "the zday I die, the zday I die, where will we beeeeeee" ad nauseum
Ive also enjoyed a majority of their songs much more live than on record. Especially the songs i dont like the studio versions of.
The first verse and bridge are phenomenal "I don't need you, I don't need you Besides I barely ever see you anymore And when I do it feels like you're only halfway there Young mothers love me even ghosts of Girlfriends call from Cleveland They will meet me anytime and anywhere" "I get a little punchy with the vodka just like my great uncle Valentine Jester did But he had to deal with those people like you who made no goddamn common sense I'd rather walk all the way home right now than to spend one more second in this place I'm exactly like you Valentine, just come outside and leave with me" It's a great song, and the sentiment of wondering where the person you love will be the day that you die is extremely relatable during a breakup/divorce. It really works for me, especially in context of the album.
glad it works for you. it's by no means a bad song, just never really connected with me and it's a shame because I adore the rest of the album
Nobody Else Will Be There is the only song from the A side that I would consider essential. B side goes hard though.
ya if not for the callback it's one of the worst songs they've ever done imo I like Turtleneck enough, def good. Even being harsh on it, those are legit the only two non stellar songs on the record imo.
the reason why Turtleneck sticks out so much is they don't really do songs like that anymore. scruff it up a bit and throw it on Alligator and it fits right in
when you cried at the beach and recovered in seconds and said everything's fine, but I knew that it wasn't fuck
Might just be being a curmudgeon but this is shaping up to be the hardest a band has died for me in a single album cycle since the national put out high violet kidding about half of that
Lyrics are there, music just…isn’t for me on the first listen. I’m sure once Apple Music catches up and I can listen to something of higher quality than YouTube on my phone I’ll be able to dig in more.
Pretty good track. I think I like the first single better. Both are better than Weird Goodbyes. Edit: Enjoyed it more on my second listen. It’s nothing exciting and definitely one of those National tracks that will please some and bore others.
Basically this. It'll scratch the itch for some, I'll enjoy it when it comes on, but it's never going to be one of my favorites.
