Was very happy that even though I waited a couple of weeks, was still able to see this in a completely packed room. Seeing a comedy in the theater is a magical thing, had such a great time
This was very good. It had all the spirit of the original films but was paced for modern audiences. The Tivo joke is going to be a head scratcher for anyone under 40 (and it doesn't even really work anyway), but the jokes come so fast that you can't really linger on anything for too long. I wish CCH Pounder had been in more of the film so it could feel like a loose sequel to The Shield. The snowman bit was maybe the best, and he should have returned in the end.
I also just got out of this and I agree with everything. Not every joke landed but the fact that they even went for it is appreciated, and I really felt like I was watching another film from that era. Give me more, comedy needs a comeback.
I think the Tivo joke mostly works because of how bizarre it is and the Buffy references. It doesn't just rely on knowledge of Tivo, it has more than that. If it was a simple throwaway joke about Tivo I think it would have been extremely flat.
The TiVo joke works for me on the meta level of it being funny to even be referencing TiVo in the 2020s in the first place
It sucks to to see that happening, but also, it made $4.8 million last week and will probably make like $2-3 million this weekend. It’s on its last legs in its theatrical run, so of course Paramount is going to immediately shove it on VOD than do something like try to get more people to see it.
I don’t really know what a movie needs to make to be considered successful but I have to imagine almost 80m for a comedy has to count?
I don't think the marketing budget is more than $30 million, that's why all the big blockbuster movies can be like it made $200 million it's a flop lol
Yeah, it definitely did well for a comedy and will likely continue to make money on VOD, streaming and playing endlessly on cable, as long as that still exists.
Unfortunately COVID has let the genie out of the bottle when it comes to theatrical exclusivity and there's no way the studios (who want to make money) are letting that genie back in.
Been off the forums for a few months but back to say I loved this. Saw it with two friends and we love these types of movies, and have watched the originals countless times. Was a packed cinema, and everyone was there for it. I hope the reviews and overall positivity around it encourages more and more to get made. Bring on Scary Movie 6 and Spaceballs 2.
