I might not be able to see this until next week due to me watching Spider-Man on Friday. Let me know how it is without spoilers, please. Between this, Spider-Man, the optimistic reviews of Bumblebee, and the enjoyable qualities of Aquaman, this should be a good December for films and a bad December for my wallet.
Embargo supposedly lifts at 4 EST today. Still don’t know why my local theaters aren’t doing Thursday night showings for this. They usually do at least one for every wide-ish release.
Some of these early reviews seem to consider it maybe a masterpiece but, like, grudgingly? It’s so weird. I’ve never seen anything like this before.
David also had it at **** 1/2 stars on Letterboxd (though he just updated it down to ****). If nothing else, it seems like this movie is fucking crazy.
Yeah he gave it 4 and a half stars but also said it has no chance at the Oscars, which is interesting
See, that excites me. I find Clint's straight down the middle Oscar plays to be unbelievably boring for the most part.
All of the negative reviews have listed that it’s racist. I think some people mistake a writer making a character flawed by being racist (and for this instance it’s based on a real person) for the story itself being racist. Some have mentioned the ending not fully paying off but I’ll live with that.
Clint Eastwood is awful politically and I was def worried this would be racist, same seeing the Peppermint trailer no need to make any more movies where nameless Latino people are drug dealers
Clint Eastwood, as a person, yes. I haven’t seen the film to know the degree of racism in it but I think it’s improtant to distinguish a racist film from a film with flawed and racist characters. One is making a film to insult and the other is to tell the unfortunate reality of certain parts of humanity. If it’s in the same degree as Gran Torino, it’s meant to represent how cold, bitter, and void the main character is. Something that the story eventually allows the character to overcome in a touching and emotional way.
