I was just hoping they would do this. Glorious. Righteous. Bodacious. Mint.

npr stream quality seems weirdly low. "unicorn tolerance" is a goddamn jam

The quality is unusually bad for an NPR stream, I agree.

Either way though this is damn good.

Okay, first listen is done with. 16 albums, 26 years, almost 350 songs, and he's still finding ways to be great and innovative. This was delightful.

I'm really enjoying this right now. Perfect soundtrack to this cold, rainy day. (I really need to start diving in deeper in his discography, it's just so overwhelming).

I listened once and it's good and it will need more listens from me

Also the ambient EP is tight

This rules. The way he finds a distinct musical identity for each album is awesome.

Abandoned Flesh is a great closer

Good point. Esp. with the last album, there are maybe a handful of musicians who could write about wrestling without it being incredibly corny.

Yeah this is really great. The instrumentation is lush and gives the songs plenty of room to breathe.

    "Abandoned Flesh" is beautiful.

Great album. Darnielle always makes his brilliance look so goddamn effortless.

When that second half of "Shelved" hits and the song really opens up....so good.

Shelved sounds like a New Order song and I love it

That's exactly what I thought when the bassline(?) kicks in

This whole album is great, but I still can't get over that final three song stretch of Shelved -> Portuguese -> Abandoned Flesh.

Just a killer way to close out an already fantastic album.

  24. John's doing a podcast about the Mountain Goats discography, and the first episode is out today. They're starting by going through All Hail West Texas song by song, and Laura Jane Grace covers "The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton" on this one.

It’s like Song Exploder except every episode is about The Mountain Goats. I can get down with that.
