love love we shall all be healed, probably my second favorite tmg record the life of the world to come gets seriously underrated too
"We shall see visions More vivid than sunsets Brighter than stars We will recognize each other And see ourselves for the first time The way we really are" That might be one of John's best series of lyrics on We Shall All Be Healed. Love this album.
I'm not sure I could name another artist who balances being endlessly prolific with consistent quality as much as the Goats do. Not a single clunker of an album in the entire discography. Even the albums I don't come back to as often — Heretic Pride and Get Lonely, mostly — I still find a lot to admire and enjoy.
I think The Life of the World to Come is maybe his best work in terms of being a cohesive album. That last song always gives me chills.
I love how deftly he can weave together humor and pathos. Like in "Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" where you get a line like "the top three contenders, after weeks of debate, were Satan's Fingers, and The Killers, and The Hospital Bombers" followed by a line like "when you punish a person for dreaming his dream, don't expect him to thank or forgive you."
The album is out there, and it's stellar. The lack of guitars doesn't feel at the forefront of this album, and it's kind of a record that touches on goth music the way Beat the Champ lovingly looked at pro wrestling.
Really into this on first listen, and I'm looking forward to checking out all the bands that are mentioned in the lyrics, since I've only heard a couple of them before.
Still trying to digest a lot of records that have actually come out so I might wait until the official release to listen, but it's good to see these positive impressions.
