this record is actually kind of perfect for warm summer nights. @Craig Manning not sure if this band has been your thing in the past but give it a try.
Yeah, his lyrical style (short stories) and voice can take a little getting used to, but I find the writing to be powerful when you sink into it. One of the session players on this album is Spooner Oldham, who played Wurlitzer on Aretha’s Lady Soul and I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. Definitely feel like that adds to the dusky sound.
Love the new one. Kola Superdeep is fucking GREAT Here's my ranking, sorry if I'm forgetting one or two Tier A We Shall All Be Healed - "Against Pollution" is prob my favourite song of all time The Sunset Tree - best realized album imo Tallahassee - this was my first TMG album and I wore it out All Hail West Texas - my fave of the early albums Transcendental Youth - the best latter day album, love White Cedar and the Gladiators Zopilote Machine - spotty but the high points are high In League With Dragons - super underrated, the first half is insanely good The Life Of The World To Come - these songs work better live but they're amazing Get Lonely - I need to listen to this more but I do love it Tier B The Coroner's Gambit Full Force Galesburg Sweden Dark In Here Songs For Pierre Chuvin Getting Into Knives Tier C All Eternals Deck - I listened to this five times and it made zero impact Heretic Pride - "Autoclave" is great and the rest made no impression Goths - I actively dislike this album Beat The Champ - same
Setlists from the first shows of tour The Mountain Goats Setlist at The Orange Peel, Asheville The Mountain Goats Setlist at Variety Playhouse, Atlanta
He played Going To Georgia at the Asheville show which I thought he hated and avoided playing but I guess not
I’m tempted to go to one of the Chicago shows but since they’re sold out I don’t want to pay resale prices. I’ll probably just keep checking and see if anyone is selling one for normal price closer to the shows and if not, they tour so much I’ll catch them next time.
So good. The songs from the last couple albums were surprising highlights. They worked much better live than I expected.
Aside from there being a thunderstorm when I left and being stuck on the subway due to it, it was a great night. They killed it on stage. The newer songs absolutely sounded great live.
John played "Original Air-Blue Gown" solo for the first time live since 1997 last night and it was very cool.
Last night was my first time seeing them live. Really good set. John Darnielle was really talkative too
