***EDIT*** - From what I'm gathering this is a way to get out front of controversy that lead singer Dicky Barrett is likely an anti-vaxxer and dodging fallout that he produced a prominent track for and had ties to RFK Jr.'s anti-vax rally from last weekend. Sad.

    Original Message:

I'm a bit shocked at this.

One I'm really surprised that the announcement is just three or so sentences long; a band that does indeed seem like brothers to me that's been around for as long as they have and have diehard fans like they do, I'd expect a much longer, more genuine sounding message.

Two, I thought they had a nice thing going being mostly inactive but doing a handful of shows each year as schedules allowed and making music mostly for fun - I don't see the point in formally breaking up like this.

They were the first band I truly loved and got into as a kid (The 737 in my handle is a reference to one of their songs). I bought all their records in the late 90's and learned to play guitar in part because of them.

They were pretty inactive as it was and their main period of the 90's is long behind them so it's not a huge blow, but again I am surprised as I always assumed they'd just continue to exist in their current form basically forever as something fun they'd all do now and then with no pressure or obligations.

With all that in mind I feel like there's something more behind this decision, but again they all seem so tight with one another, so who knows.

    It’s because he’s anti-vaxx

    Aaaachem!

Is that why he's not on Kimmel anymore either?

    I’d guess that’s a big reason.

Wow, I see Rolling Stone and AV Club articles which strongly indicate that Dicky had a connection to RFK Jr. and the whole anti-vax rally by producing a track they used for it. Folks on reddit said they likely spotted Dicky's wife in a video for the track which is tied into the whole thing and she's apparently a big anti-vaxer.

I was suspicious given the seeming abruptness of the message.

Just a sad way for the band to go out with a whimper like that and Dicky obviously being replaced on Kimmel if that's indeed the (probable) reason.

Lame way to tarnish a legacy to say the least.

I agree with above - going out with a whimper, wouldve expected more for their fans.

Especially in Massachusetts. This will/could tarnish their legacy...

A band like this having been around this long it’s so lame to hear the how/why of their official demise

For anyone that wants to learn the coolest song on the guitar to impress people outside of John Frusciante then impression that I get is it.

having seen these guys live about 4 times starting when I was 8 this is sad. I’m 35 now.
