Still haven't seen Frances Ha or Mistress America... I should really change that. Big fan of Squid and the Whale though. Thought While We're Young was good too.

That's what I keep hearing. I don't know how I missed them, but I did. Will make a point to watch them both soon. They're kinda meant to be watched together, right?

 

Sort of? They would make a big double feature since their both collaborations with Greta Gerwig who stars in and co-wrote both of them, but you wouldn't necessarily be missing anything from one if you hadn't seen the other I suppose

That being said I'd prolly go Frances before Mistress

 

they're not part of the same cinematic universe, auteurs should get cinematic universes too, but I guess they're both similar in terms of being spotlights for Greta Gerwig

 

They definitely complement and play off each other wonderfully, but you don't really lose anything by watching them separate.

Now I want to watch them back to back.

Do you generally like French New Wave films?

 

Indeed. I "got" it, I guess, it just didn't do much for me. I preferred Listen Up Phillip, if you could compare them.

 

Pretty sure he called Mistress a spiritual follow up to Frances or something like that haha. No direct ties but I think he definitely views them as companion films.

Echoing they are his two best, but I view Squid really nostalgically and don't really wanna watch it again so I don't taint that
