The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (Noah Baumbach, 2017) Movie

Is this Adam Sandler's redemption? If anyone can do it, it's Baumbach. Also starring Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Candice Bergen.

 

Baumbach always fluctuates in quality, so it is hard to ever get a feel for what to expect. Last year he comes out with something great in Mistress America and then something very tone-deaf in While We're Young. It has been that way since The Squid and the Whale.

 

Margot at the Wedding is the only bad movie Noah Baumbach has ever made.

While We Were Young was a major misstep, but Frances Ha and Mistress America are among the decade's best. Curious to see how this goes.

 

I still enjoyed While We're Young quiet a bit but Mistrss and Frances Ha are very obviously better. Looking forward to this immensely.

 

Frances Ha is the only Baumbach movie I sort of like (haven't seen Mistress America yet) but kind of curious to see Sandler in this role

 

People don't like Squid? That was a big deal for me in high school

 

re-watched While We're Young last night and it definitely held up better than I remember. It's definitely on the nose, but I think the pure comedy brings it up for me, but I could understand people thinking it was a big misstep.

Had no idea this was coming out though! Sandler + Baumbach + Emma Thompson has me very intrigued

 

Honestly, I don't think I ever want to watch While We're Young again. I did rewatch Mistress America the other night. It becomes way better when Baumbach ditches the Frances Ha-lite aspect and goes full screwball in the back half.

 

That's totally fair, I just saw it was on Amazon Prime and had a curiosity. Totally agree on Mistress America though, it just gets so delightfully ridiculous in the back half. What would you say his peak thus far is? Frances Ha?

 

Frances Ha, for sure. I remember The Squid and the Whale being very good, but it's been quite a few years since I've seen it.

 

I liked While We're Young a lot

 

Definitely will keep this on my radar. Sandler has demonstrated that he has legitimate acting talent while working with actually talented filmmakers in the past, specifically in Punch-Drunk Love, so him teaming with Baumbach could be great.

 

Frances Ha and Squid and the Whale make a filmography worth keeping up with. I missed While We're Young though.

 

Not to mention his collabs with Wes Anderson.

 

And no one ever mentions Madagascar 3!

 

And Kicking and Screaming, that classic Will Ferrell soccer comedy!

 

I actually legitimately did forget about his Kicking and Screaming, I remember liking it but can't remember much about it

 

Frances Ha was just okay

 

Love Frances Ha, not a fan of While We're Young, thought Mistress America was pretty good. Definitely curious about this.
