  1. I usually have no problem with clean vocals. What I meant is the shift to the poppier delivery Anders has taken since Battles. I would appreciate this album so much more if his performance was more restrained like in their 00s days. With all the layering and weird pitch correction, it's just too much and I don't think it fits the music here.

With In Flames, it doesn't help that the onset of more melodic clean vocals in their music coincided with a considerable downturn in quality otherwise.

It's so strange to me how often that occurs. Like. There shouldn't be anything intrinsically less technical about melodic cleans. And when done well, they can enhance shit to new heights. But so often they don't. Why? Is it just because musicians not used to using them don't understand how to work them into their songwriting and thus it sounds clunky and bland? Is it lack of technique or practice? Baffles me.

We reach for the longest shadow

Since we’re still talking about In Flames, are there any modern bands doing that brand of melodeath well these days?

I've posted about them a few times, but these guys are literally going for that Jester Race era IF sound and they absolutely nail it. They have an album out next month, and it turns out they released their third single today:

  11. I don't know if anyone listens to any of these bands but I caught Leprous on their current tour with Kalandra and Monuments last night. I was initially there for Kalandra, which I'm familiar with the most, but Leprous blew me away. Their singer apologizing early on for being sick... then going through a 1 hour+ set of semi operatic vocals anyway was mad. Dude got pipes. I think it was one of the most impressive performances I've witnessed yet. Also a solid reminder I should spend more time with their discography. I strongly recommend both bands for the prog or prog adjacent aficionados.

agreed. and they are crazy influential for having only released one album in 30 years. Without them, we don't get Timeghoul, Blood Incantation, Chthe'ilist, etc
