THRASH METAL THVRSDAY YOU CLOWNS AND FOOLS

Been sitting on this for a few days, we have a new EP of covers from Belgian death/thrash band Schizophrenia. Came out two days ago. We have a Slayer cover, a Morbid Angel cover, and my personal favorite - a fkin Judas Priest cover:

Next we have a 2008 release I stumbled across in Spotify. Archives lists them as 'melodic thrash with progressive elements' but you really only need to look at the cover art to know it's good. From LA:

And lastly we have a 2021 release that I should have paid more attention to, a band from @riotspray 's neck of the woods. Death/thrash goodness from good old Texas:

Listening to the new In Flames. It's for the most part decent. Nothing mindblowing but I appreciate that the guitar work is more inspired and leans more towards their melodeath roots than it has in a long time. Anders and his vocaloid generated sounding voice take me out of it a lot. It bothers me how many times a song will have a promising start then inevitably build up to the same kind of lame alt metal choruses they've been doing for way too long. Despite its faults, it's the most I've enjoyed an In Flames album since A Sense Of Purpose. It's just... it would be so much better with 75% less clean vocals.

They had a whole album written/recorded a few years ago, but then scrapped the whole thing because of label issues or something. So yeah it's taken forever to get a new album from these guys.

I know it gets redundant playing the same style after so long, but their first few albums are ridiculously good. Too good for me to be able to enjoy anything past Eclipse. Mark Okubo and Sam Applebaum are capable of much better but settle for generic.

The Common Man’s Collapse to this day is an all time favorite metal album of mine. Mark, Sam and Higler went off. Even love the eerie instrumentals.

My band shares a practice space building with High Command (or used to, we've had burst pipes). Good dudes. Singer always brings a sword on stage.

I'm the kind of person who absolutely needs clean vocals at some point or I lose interest, because I feel like a lot of unclean vocalists don't do it in any musical kind of way and I also like to understand the lyrics I'm hearing. It gets exhausting.

There's maybe one or two bands that I'm willing to accept unclean vocals all the way through from, because they know how to write songs in a way that they remain interesting or scream in a way that still makes them intelligible.

For example, I've never been able to get into Arch Enemy for these reasons, despite multiple attempts.

That being said, and I'm only saying this as a casual In Flames fan, but I don't think clean vocals are their problem so much as an inability to write interesting songs.

I also have had trouble getting into their work post-Purpose, but I think that's more on their songwriting abilities than anything else.
