Their last album was an awesome throwback to me because it encapsulated the sound I got into more extreme music with perfectly. But with this, it just jumps the shark for me. If the cleans sounded more like Killswitch Engage or even Karl's during Controller-era Mis Sigs, I'd be all over it...but these mallcore whiny vocals just didn't age well for me at all. Though I probably should go back and listen to bands I did like that fell under the mallcore umbrella and see how they've aged.

Interesting album. They are definitely leaning further into the prog sound. Not bad, just different. Also, had no idea the vocalist had hearing issues.

The lyrics to Impaled By Tree might be the greatest thing I've ever read:

    "spears right through me
    tree branch death
    sap and blood
the log is my new bed

    it's been 72 hours
    of tree root acupuncture
shit and piss in my shorts
    sap and puss coagulate

gangrene sets in I feel dizzy
    don't say trees are friendly
    I am not bear food
ant hill in my severed leg
    leaves in my brain

    I could've used a lumberjack at least"

Getting some real big Cave-In vibes from the new Judas Knife album.

I don’t know if I get Cave In but one song legit sounded like Andrew McMahon, lol

It took me a bit too. It’s a good album once it clicks.

Blame my shitty ears for hearing things that may or may not be applicable labels for others. :)

  25. I'm really curious to see how it's going to fare. I found it quite impressive and full of surprises. My early favorite song has to be "The Void from Which No Sound Escapes" so far. The way it flawlessly switches from sludge to groove metal to prog to that jazzy guitar solo to a saxophone (!) one? Absolutely wild.
